The Cutting Edge slices a clean line into the future and carves out space for what comes next. The Cutting Edge demands something new, something spectacular, something unforeseen. Yet, at once, the Cutting Edge warns of the violence enacted when we are severed from the past by the relentless momentum of progress. It beckons the technological, the avant-garde, the surreal. Or is it something more sinister? It could save a life, or take one. Would you see it coming?

What might Cutting Edge mean for you? Jacaranda Journal would love to know. We are putting the call out for works of short fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and photography that respond in charismatic and insightful ways to this provocative prompt.

Submissions close at midnight on the 26th of August! Submit

Our fabulous editor Jade reviews Emily Austin's 'Interesting Facts About Space'! Read her thoughts below👇

Austin’s debut Everyone in This Room Will Someday Be Dead was one of my favourite books in 2022 (and most likely one of my all time favourites!), so naturally I couldn’t go past her newest release.

Similar to her debut, Interesting Facts About Space is a hilariously poignant look into the inner turmoils that come with, well, existence. Serial dater Enid is a neurodivergent 26-year-old hard of hearing le***an with a deep penchant towards all things space. She has a fear of bald men, is obsessed with true crime podcasts, has a complicated relationship with her depressive mother, and despite her repulsion towards her adolescent self, she can’t seem to stop watching the Youtube videos she made as a teenager. As Enid tries to navigate a world that isn’t quite made for her, she spirals towards paranoia, obsessed with the fear that someone is following her.

Austin’s writing is fiercely intelligent and nuanced, eccentric and macabre. Enid is a complex yet beautifully crafted character who reflects the debilitating and peculiar way that anxiety infests the everyday. Her way of existing in the world is one that I’m sure many of us can relate to. I’ll leave you with the following excerpt:

‘I spent a lot of time growing up trying to seem normal. Sometimes I worry I neglected doing the internal work most people do while they’re developing; I was too preoccupied with camouflaging. I think I might be stunted because of it. I think I missed a step.’

Calling all photographers!📸

We are on the hunt for a photograph for the front cover of our upcoming edition 11.1 Exposed Roots. We are looking for a piece that speaks to this theme of the edition in a unique and thought provoking way. (For the full write up of the original prompt, check the pinned submissions post on our grid).

While we can’t offer financial compensation to our creatives and contributors as a volunteer-run journal at this stage, this is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your work alongside our exceptional writers and add a very cool project to your portfolio!

They say don’t judge a book by its cover, but...we kind of have to in this instance! So please send your photography pieces for consideration to [email protected], or through the link in our bio by Wednesday the 8th of May! 🫶
