About 70 per cent of the municipality’s population reside in the urban areas, which makes up only 3 per cent of the land. The remainder live in rural areas. The Shire has over 55 suburbs, towns

Lilydale’s features include Lillydale Lake, a recreational area located in the region’s wetlands. Nowadays, the lake is surrounded by new housing estates. The lake is situated within a park, which extends for over 100 hectares. Lillydale Lake itself is 28 hectares in size, and has a 440 metre long dam wall. In the park, there are more than 10 kilometres of shared trails, a community room, a playground, BBQs and a picnic area. Non powered boating is perrmitted on the lake, with a launch ramp also put to good use during the summer months. Running through Lilydale, The Olinda Creek has its source in the Dandenong Ranges. It is a tributary of the Yarra River. About the Lilydale and Yarra Valley Leader
