The final curtain — BODY&SOUL's closing night · September 26

After more than 50 years, one of the world's most beloved jazz clubs plays its last note. On BODY&SOUL's final operating night, this closing concert is a direct tribute to founder Kyoko "Mama" Seki — bringing together pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto, whose blues-rooted acoustic swing reflects the sound Seki championed since 1974, and vocalist and flugelhornist TOKU, whose dual voice bridges post-bop and classic vocal jazz. They're joined by veteran musicians who shaped this room over decades: Hirofumi Kagawa (bass), Hisao Osumi (drums) and Shinobu Ishizaki (alto saxophone).

This is the last time the doors will open. Wherever you are in the world, be there for it — and keep the music long after the room goes quiet.

Bassist and leader Akiyoshi Shimizu sets aside the traditional brass section entirely, building his front line from a rare woodwind configuration — multiple flutes, clarinet and bass clarinet — for a set of intricate, chamber-jazz textures over a precise piano-and-drums rhythm section.

THE REAL Veleria — live at BODY&SOUL · September 23

Pianist and composer Kazuhiro Takemoto brings his large-ensemble project to the BODY&SOUL stage, in one of the club's final performances — music that bridges classical chamber writing and contemporary jazz. Built on Takemoto's original compositions, the ensemble pairs a full string quartet with a dual-percussion rhythm section, creating complex, shifting textures beneath the strings. Guest vocalist Ema joins the acoustic tapestry, singing melodic lines alongside the violins, viola and cello.

It's an unusually rich, cinematic sound — classical elegance and jazz freedom in the same breath.

Line-up: Kazuhiro Takemoto (piano/composition), Junichi Sato (double bass), Kunito Kitai (drums), Kenta Okamoto (percussion), Atsuki Yoshida & Shiori Nishihara (violins), Ayaka Suehiro (viola), Kanato Iijima (cello), and Ema (guest vocals).

Momento Cigano Extended — recorded live at the Ljubljana Festival, premiering on Oh! Jazz

Recorded during the 74th edition of the Ljubljana Festival — a collaboration between Oh! Jazz and one of Europe's historic cultural institutions — this session captures guitarist Teo Collori and the expanded Momento Cigano. Rooted in the tradition of gypsy swing, the group builds an original language of strong rhythmic drive and melodic focus, and for this performance brings in a dedicated string section, uniting musicians from jazz and classical backgrounds.

Founded in 2015, the ensemble has built a rich discography and collaborated with the likes of the RTV Slovenia Big Band. Here they balance structured string arrangements with the improvisational heart of the gypsy jazz tradition — warm, acoustic, and irresistibly rhythmic.

Premieres September 18 on Oh! Jazz.
