Born in Glasgow in 1942, the legendary Scottish comedian, actor and all-round storyteller turns 83 today!

From unforgettable roles in Mrs Brown (1998), The Man Who Sued God (2001), The Last Samurai (2003), and Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004), to stepping into Middle-earth as Dain Ironfoot in The Hobbit Billy’s talent has lit up screens big and small.

In recent years, Billy has faced prostate cancer and Parkinson’s with trademark courage and honesty, ultimately retiring from performing in 2019. But his humour, warmth and spirit continue to inspire millions around the world.
