Hamza Khan, a Melbourne architect with Cox Architecture, has been shortlisted among the top 100 entries in an international design competition by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority and architectural awards body Architecture Competitions // Buildner.

Drawing entrants from 91 countries – and offering a range of prizes worth a combined cash pool of €500,000 ($890,000) – the Dubai Urban Elements Design Challenge asked designers to reimagine civic architecture within Dubai’s public spaces.

“It doesn’t have to hurt to do good,” Khan says. “This proposal shows that sustainability can be playful, inspiring and human-centred by creating vibrant urban spaces that connect communities and celebrate city life.”

Melbourne-based recruitment agency Bespoke Careers has released a new report, revealing global trends among designers and architects who are leaving firms that fail to live up to their sustainability promises.

Bespoke Careers has published its ‘State of Sustainability in Architecture and Design 2025’ report, an international survey that charts how sustainability measures are shaping career paths across the industry.

As the report's editor Hattie Hartman shares, "I thought that the report was an interesting idea, but it’s gone way beyond what I expected. The fact that a quarter of respondents have left or declined a job over sustainability is phenomenal."

Onyx Solar Energy and Metz Group are delivering a custom Building Integrated Photovoltaics solution for Sydney's Atlassian Central, a project set to be the tallest hybrid timber and steel structure in the world.

1794 photovoltaic modules integrated directly into the building envelope will not only generate clean energy but also feature self-shading properties that reduce heat gain, lower cooling loads and further reduce the building’s embodied carbon footprint.

According to Metz, this advanced technology isn’t just reserved for major builds. On 16 October 2025, Onyx Solar’s chief technical officer Teodosio Del Caño will fly from Spain to Brisbane to present ‘Powering Innovation with BiPV’ to the local design community.

Jacob Stavrakis, an architect at YSG Studio, shares three lessons he learned at Sydney Design Week, held from 12 to 24 September 2025.

"As an architect, I’ve learnt that sometimes too much attention to detail can blur the bigger picture. This year for Sydney Design Week, organisers Powerhouse invited us to take a step back and gain a better perspective from a range of local and international leaders in their field on how design shapes our communities and the way we live together," he says.
