A story I couldn’t recommend more highly.

There are daily taboos associated with life in general - but specific and incredibly unique taboos when it comes to cancer, and the various forms cancer can take.

These taboos need to be dismantled for the sake of human kindness and comfort. Nothing should be left swept under the rug - because when that happens, somebody is made to feel ashamed or embarrassed.

This story of Colon Cancer opened my eyes to the elements of illnesses we subconsciously allow our minds to skip over because they are uncomfortable to think about and consider.

But while some of these elements may seem granular compared to the cancer itself - they’re mammoth in size to those who endure them.

Toilet use, bowel movements, regularity, s*x, the femininity we hold vs the masculinity.

Brave, eye opening, honest - Laurie Abraham has penned an incredible piece here - worthy of everyone’s time. 💪🏼

Healthy ovaries lead to mothers & children. Growing families & sweet traditions. Memories, togetherness, places to belong.

The world could be just 1 year away from protecting all of this with a blood test designed to detect early stages of Ovarian Cancer, stopping the disease in its tracks. This will allow mothers to stay and grow old with their children and grandchildren. The way it should be.

Currently, over 75% of women are diagnosed in late stages when it’s often too late. By 2050, the number of woman around the world diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer will rise over 55% to 503,438. The number of women dying from the disease each year is projected to increase to 350,956 - an increase of almost 70% from 2022. The surge is due to population increases, our aging population (re Australia) amongst other factors.

The early-stage signs are very subtle, vague and often mistaken for everyday issues like digestion problems, stress, or aging. That’s why Ovarian Cancer sometimes called the “silent killer.

This can all be changed with deeper funding. Women’s health is still deemed taboo too much of the time. But the reality is, we couldn’t be here without women and their life giving ovaries.

I am loving the voice of young female writers at the moment (aka the divine 20-somethings) This particular essay by Amanda Brownn (Good Riddance on Substack) was as beautifully poignant as it was relatably blatant.

“… real love should never feel like surveillance.“

It made me think. Loved it. Subscribed.
