Actually, why choose? 😅🤔 Amiright?

What kind of genres or sub-genres would you like to hear about from an author who writes in that category? If you're like me and can't decided - gimme ALL THE OPTIONS - then how would you rank them?

Down the rabbit hole we go, romantics! 🐇 Let's traverse together.

And if you want to explore more genres or subgenres, you can find the RtS podcast wherever you listen to podcasts. 🎙️ Or ya know, the 🔗 of my bio works too.

Let's settle this once and for all. For storytelling, it's important to treat the animals on the same tier as a human character because we empathize through them. 🐕

Don't believe me? I did a whole podcasts episode about it because THAT'S how important dogs are to people and the stories we tell. 🙌

After hearing discourse around an indie author flexing about offing a dog in her novel, I couldn't help but think of the chat I had with one of my good friends and all time fav guests, Amber Royer Author. She opened my eyes about the pivotal role animals play in a storyline and how they aren't just props in a scene.

Honestly, you want some cute pets who live and are an extension of their owners? Grab her cozy mystery series STAT and support stories that have animals helping solving crimes!!

Oh my! It's a May schedule with authors who chat about your favorite romance tropes, plotlines and sub-genres. 💃

First, Sarah Hawley shows versatility in her ability to write that is a layered treat of darker narratives, brutal high-stakes, and romantasy to boot! ✨

Then, I tag down Thea Claire to gab with me all about writing romance with messy, complex characters who are recovering, finding their tribe, and defining love and boundaries in their own terms along the way. Plus, ren fairs and how writing became her own catharsis in recovery! Out 5/12. 👑

Finally, two of the three phenomenal talents of Juicy Details Editing geek out with me about all things romance, and how the importance of editing is bringing out the best in a story. Plus, going the extra mile to help writers find the right fit - even if it's not with them. Bonus: we rant a little about AI. So there's that. Haha. 🎀

Brutal Trails. Brewing Rebellion. A Cruel Fae Kingdom. A fiery protagonist determined to save herself.

✨Aaaaaaannd Romantasy. ✨

I chatted with Sarah Hawley about occupying space in darker narratives and high-stakes fantasy stories and how they compare to her lighter rom-com books. The first in The Shards of Magic Series, Servant of Earth, grapples with questions of power and responsibility and the consequences of those that act and others that don’t - as well as the intersection of allegory in fighting oppressors and escapism for ourselves.

You're not gonna want to miss this episode - then grab the book to binge-read! 🗡️ Available now wherever you get podcasts. 🎙️

No host, aka me, was harmed in the making of these reviews. 😬

Unprompted, the (teenage) kiddos listened to several of my episodes; perfectly fine since most of my episodes are PG to PG-13 territory. But then they decided to provide unsolicited feedback. 🫣 I'm glad they waited to tell me after listening cause I would have been too anxious otherwise, but I love the fact they are so supportive. 🥰💕

Kiddos couldn't remember which episodes they listened to, but if you were a guest, please note the kiddos were thoroughly impressed that you wrote a book or created a film and had the guts to talk about it on a podcast. Haha.

Time for a little reflection on 2024. 🤔

I remember filling out the bingo card in January 2024 and thinking, "I'm not going to achieve all of this, but dang it, I'm gonna try!"

The year got crazy with a series of medical emergencies and separately, a displaced kiddo called for us help. But after several rollercoaster rides of emotions and events, we got ourselves back on track. And what do you know! It was a healthy mix of both achieved and *womp womp* unachieved goals. Along the way, there was a lot of realizations - on who I want to be as a person, mom, wife, and advocate for others - and what's truly important to me. It's not exactly as I envisioned it, but it's where I need to be. So with thoughts of what new challenges and accomplishments the next year holds, I'm going into 2025 with ideas of what comes next. 🫶

Text for last slide:

"What a wild year! It started off rocky with multiple hospital stays and emergencies, but we’re ending strong! Growth is definitely the word for 2024. While I aimed to grow the podcast, turns out I grew my family! We now have another adopted kiddo in the mix, unexpected but very welcome! And our original kiddo grew both as her own person and within our dynamic. Best of all, there was a lot of healing for both kids. My podcast grew with more specific and tailored content - not in quantity but in quality - and I want to continue branching out with more content that is meaningful and supportive. Here looking at you, 2025!"
