This is a fabulous read from Samar Aoun AM regarding Compassionate Communities Australia and the latest survey around a greatly misunderstood part of life and death, Palliative Care.

Highlighting many points including greater need for carer support and grief and bereavement support, this article also speaks to a need for greater grief literacy, yes Samar is singing from my song book, where I promote death literacy, grief literacy.

Also, education around what IS Palliative care, really, not just clinical support, but whole of community support for those dying, those caring and the community is such an important part of this conversation.

Both highlight this topic which Professor Aoun has based her research on, so informative and still so much to learn.

A beautiful poem written by a griever

Today, I sat with grief.
There was no noise, no distractions, just me and the weight in my heart.

I thought if I stayed silent long enough, maybe grief would slip away.
But it stayed beside me, patient and still.

I tried to turn my back on it,
hoping it would lose its way.
But wherever I moved, it moved too,
like a shadow I couldn’t outrun.
This wasn’t a game—it was real, and it was heavy.

I changed rooms, changed scenery,
but grief was always there, waiting for me,
with a tear-streaked face that mirrored my own sadness.

I asked it why it wouldn’t leave,
why it clung to me so tightly.
But grief never answered,
because grief doesn’t need to.
So instead of pushing it away,
I let it sit beside me.

I stopped pretending I was fine.
I allowed myself to feel everything,
to show every crack, every broken piece.

Grief didn’t ask questions.
It didn’t rush me to heal.
It just stayed, patiently,
while I learned to breathe again.
Grief ate with me,
slept with me,
walked with me.

And slowly, I understood—
even if grief someday grows quieter,
the love behind it will never leave.
Because you are still gone,
and part of me will always miss you.

But sitting with grief?
It’s how I honor what was real.

Great conversation starter show, starting tonight!!!

Have you planned your funeral, your final goodbye?

Chances are you haven’t, and you’re not alone. Only 1 in 5 Australians have talked to their family and friends about how they want to be farewelled.

Starting this Wednesday 14 August on SBS is ‘Ray Martin: The Last Goodbye’.

In this three-part series, the multiple gold Logie-award winning journalist takes a deep dive into the nation’s last taboo – death.

Like many Australians, Ray hasn’t talked about his wishes to his family and friends. And, as a baby boomer, in four years’ time, Ray will reach the average age of death – 83.

Through insights and humour, Ray looks at the way death is treated among cultures, religions and different viewpoints as he sets about planning his own funeral and how he is laid to eternal rest.

You can watch the trailer here - https://loom.ly/4WO3qic and tune in to SBS or SBS On Demand on Wednesday 14 August at 8.30pm.
