One shot from the “De mon tube à Teahupo’o” article in the new Issue 124 - with photos by Tim McKenna and words and surfing by Louis Marchiset.

Along with being a crazy-good longboarder, Frenchman Louis is a fine writer and here he tells the story of just what it took to get himself to Tahiti and into this serious shortboards-only line-up, and then onto a couple of bombs. Louis previously appeared in PLB in Issue 122 charging a monster righthand barrel in Sumatra on a single-fin log. Here though he’s on a 9’1” tri. Go mate!

(PHOTO 1) Our cover shot from Issue 117. Credited to Micky Munoz in 1959, the Quasimodo was a throwaway goof-off move, but there’s something cool about it right?

The surfer is Joe Aaron who’s riding a board he shaped himself, and his brother Jordan took the photo from the water. Adds Joe: “Mickey Munoz shaped my first custom board back when I was nine years old, so everything really just aligned for this moment!”

(PHOTO 2) Munoz and the original Quasimodo - John Severson’s famed photo from 1959.

It’s a pointless move really, but that’s the point. We have run a couple of shots here before of Aussies giving it a crack back in the day but got howled down by Californian surfers pointing out that they had the arms all wrong - the outside one must be forward, the inside one trailing. Joe got it sorted. Quasimodo lives!

Wayne Lynch Evo delivery to our 108th subscriber board winner!

1. Chris Cain from Wayne Lynch Surfboards and Nettleton Surfboards hands over the 8’4” Evo to a rather chuffed Craig Leete at Lennox.

2. The original Evolution poster – and Wayne with the clear volan, satin finish 2025 version - 8’4” x 22 3/4” x 3”.

Says Wayne: “I’d shaped two Evo designs before the one that appeared in the poster, and everything I’ve done with these boards since is a refinement of that basic idea. The rockers are different but the plan-shape is the exact template I had back then. The current design has a modern bottom contour of single to double concave, with fin options for a single or a 2+1, or thrusters in the smaller versions. With flow and speed in mind, the Evo will provide the powerful rail-engaging style of surfing that I’ve enjoyed and been addicted to for over 50 years.”

Yes that’s 108 board winners! Look out for 109! pacificlongboarder.com *tag in bio

Our current Issue’s cover surfer Vaimiti Teiefitu (see yesterday’s post) - but this photo ran as our Out The Back page in the magazine five years ago. And it too was taken off Moorea in French Polynesia.

Said photographer Lorenzo Avvenenti: “We woke early and paddled the va’a (canoe) out to the spot, got there before the morning wind and Vai was on fire! After this wave she was caught by a big set that broke her magic Somo longboard . . . but still she was smiling from all these glassy waves she got.”

The full frame of the cover of the new Issue 124. We cropped it vertical to fit the cover format, but how cool to see this striking photo at its full frame, you think?

Beatriz Ryder is an official WSL CT photographer, and this is her take on how it came to be: “This was in Moorea, the island next to Tahiti, on a lay-day during the 2025 Tahiti Pro. It’s one of my favourite places on earth, and I’ve known Vaimiti (the renowned French Polynesian longboarder Vaimiti Teiefitu) for years but hadn’t seen her in a while. I’ve been going to Tahiti every year for a few years now so it’s super cool to re-visit friendships made throughout my travels there. I was out there shooting in the water and saw this surfer taking off down the line, not realising it was Vai until she was super close! I had the feeling maybe this photo was a nice one but it wasn’t until later that night when I saw it on the computer that I realised just how beautiful and cool it was!”

FRIDAY FLASHBACK: Mele Saili out of San Diego grew up in a family of surfers and shapers (she’s the granddaughter of Larry Gordon of G&S) and she’s simply one of the most complete longboarders anywhere. These two shots lobbed here with us back in 2021 and the forehand turn ended up on the cover of Issue 113, while the cutback never did see the light of day in print. Pretty cool see them together though you think? It gives some idea of Mele’s class and flowing style. Photos by the ace Tommy Pierucki.

Just 16 with the full kit of switch turns, switch tens, parallels, cutbacks and lip smacks, Cormac is maybe the freshest scone in the bakery – and it’s all done with a dose of fun.

There’s not a wasted wave in this film, and there’s even a bit of a plot, along with a bunch of cameos from some of California’s finest.

VIDEO by Samuel Fairbank. Tom was waiting for the right day to launch the new mini-toothpick - made for Hunter and inspired by the late Bill Wallace, who taught Tom the dynamics of making toothpicks. Tom was keen to share this knowledge with 10-year-old Hunter, a budding Noosa shaper.

Filmmaker Samuel was on speed dial as they waited for all the conditions to come together. It was worth the wait. A small window opened just after midday on an inconspicuous weekday without the usual crowd.

In Once Upon a Toothpick, Tom, Hunter and friends experience surfing the iconic Australian toothpick on a magic day in Noosa. You can see and feel the stoke.

“It shows how incredible the toothpick is as a surfboard. With down the line speed and control it offers perfect trim on a wave. Skip Frye says perfect trim is the ultimate surfing experience, and I have to agree,” Tom says.

Synchronised trimming. Billy Marshall out of Southern Florida got a new hand-made fish from local shaper Aristotle Prakas, took it down to Fort Pierce Inlet at sunup for its first surf, and . . . that’s a tarpon. They’re renowned for their acrobatics when hooked, no aerials here though, just a couple of species free in the sea. Pic: Jacob Leach
