Let the rain soak in: Permeable garden surfaces

You can do a lot around your house to prevent stormwater runoff, simply by opting for permeable surfaces when landscaping. In Sanctuary 71, permaculture teacher Mara Ripani offers ideas for better paving, including gorgeous ground cover plants.

When Cath and Andy set out to renovate their 1960s home in suburban Canberra, they assumed demolition was the only option. Luckily, what began as a knockdown-rebuild plan evolved into a thoughtful retrofit, dramatically improving the home’s performance, comfort and functionality. Two tiny extensions make for increased liveability, and a flexible floor plan allows multigenerational living.

Grappling with housing unaffordability, two Sydney friends pooled their resources – and tapped into family connections – to realise their home ownership goals, building a pair of semi-detached homes each designed for family life and flexibility. “We were working on the premise of ‘do it once, do it right’,” one of them explains, “so we made spending decisions that would emphasise quality and longevity with our initial budget.” It's a beautiful result, and the story is in our current issue.
