When Cath and Andy set out to renovate their 1960s home in suburban Canberra, they assumed demolition was the only option. Luckily, what began as a knockdown-rebuild plan evolved into a thoughtful retrofit, dramatically improving the home’s performance, comfort and functionality. Two tiny extensions make for increased liveability, and a flexible floor plan allows multigenerational living.

The story features in our current issue. Read all about it:

Last month, thousands of people stepped inside real, lived-in sustainable homes for Sustainable House Day. In backyards, living rooms and online tours, they saw what’s possible: homes that stay cool in summer, warm in winter, run on clean energy, and cost less to power.

These aren’t abstract ideas—they’re happening in neighbourhoods just like yours. And when people see change is possible where they live, it spreads. One rooftop solar system leads to another. One family switching to electric inspires others.

That’s why we’re scaling up this work—sharing more stories, opening more doors, and reaching more communities. And right now, every tax-deductible donation before June 30 will be matched, dollar for dollar by a generous donor!

Grappling with housing unaffordability, two Sydney friends pooled their resources – and tapped into family connections – to realise their home ownership goals, building a pair of semi-detached homes each designed for family life and flexibility. “We were working on the premise of ‘do it once, do it right’,” one of them explains, “so we made spending decisions that would emphasise quality and longevity with our initial budget.” It's a beautiful result, and the story is in our current issue. Sanctuary 71 is all about creatively different approaches to housing: think self-contained backyard studios, multigenerational homes, flexible layouts designed to work as one or two dwellings, and even shared houses. From Perth to Sydney and across the ditch to New Zealand’s North Island, we profile new-build and renovation projects offering creative solutions to the issues of housing availability and affordability we’re facing. In On the drawing board, one enterprising couple tells the story of their Central Victoria cohousing project. We make the case for salvaging and reusing timbers in knockdown-rebuild projects, and Mara Ripani walks us through alternatives to impermeable paving, including hardy ground cover plants – plus much more.
