Growth is ongoing. With emails the best way to look at it is year on year. If you just installed Klaviyo of course your growth would look amazing, if you had 1 flow and you installed another 6 again it would be easy to reflect growth, but magic is in the year on year growth. Audience growth, revenue from email growth, segments growth, flow volume growth.

The first time you see the number of events Klaviyo can track and create automations for, you get a bit spooked. That’s the beauty of email marketing, though. A person who visited your website 5 times in the last 5 days has a completely different intent than someone who visited it once in the last 90 days. We love going granular!

Early in 2018, we worked with a guy who had a tool repair business. After a month of organic socials, he came to us genuinely frustrated: “Why do I go to Bunnings and nobody knows me?”

Social media takes time, and algorithms determine how many people see what you post. On average, only 2–5% of your followers will see any given post, and with business content, pray for 1% if you aren’t creating engaging content.

Email is a completely different game. You own the list. That’s why on average, email returns $36 for every $1 spent compared to $2.80 from social media and why email subscribers are 3–5× more engaged than social media audiences. Social media builds awareness. Email builds revenue. You need both, but you need to know which one does what.

One of the most common questions we get: What’s the difference between email and SMS marketing?

Short answer: They are two completely different channels, and they need to be treated that way. Email sits around 30–60% open rate, depending on how well you’re segmenting. SMS? You’re looking at 90%. People buy faster from a text. But that also means you can’t just blast your SMS list with anything; it has to be punchy, relevant, and worth interrupting someone’s day for. New arrivals, a live sale, a drop, everything else probably not.
