HUNTING CRUCIAL FOR WILDLIFE CONSERVATION

As the dust settles on the Federal Election, a key issue has emerged that demands the attention of Australia’s shooting and hunting communities. While fi****ms policy remains largely in the hands of the states, late in the campaign the spotlight turned to Canberra, with several political parties pledging to ban the importation of hunting trophies.

This move, spearheaded by animal rights groups and endorsed in principle by Labor, raises serious concerns about the future of international conservation efforts that rely on ethical, regulated hunting. As always, SSAA is stepping up to advocate for our members – and for real-world conservation – at the federal level.

🔎 Tested: Wedgetail MPR Mini in .223 Rem

Following the release of their .308 model, Wedgetail Industries has launched a scaled-down MPR Mini in .223 Rem, offering MSR-style ergonomics in a Category B-compliant pump-action platform.

⚠️ Not legal in all states due to appearance laws — but the rifle was tested where permitted, and the results speak for themselves. Accuracy, reliability and local manufacturing are all under the spotlight.

Dynamic duo!

Remington’s Model 700 Long Range HS in 7mm Rem Mag is built for those who like their rifles accurate, solid, and ready to stretch the distance. With its 26” heavy-profile barrel, 1:8 twist, and Timney trigger, it delivers sub-MOA precision well past the 100m mark—out to 500m with factory ammo in testing.

The HS Precision stock doesn’t just look the part—it’s fitted with a full-length bedding block for consistent accuracy and a surprisingly comfortable grip. Add a Leupold VX-5HD 4-20x52 on top, and you’ve got a serious setup that’s hard to fault.

Not threaded, but still very shootable. Not flashy, but seriously capable.

FORMAL REVIEW SECURED FOR WA FI****MS LEGISLATION

The fundamentally flawed changes to the WA fi****ms act will now be formally reviewed by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Legislation.

In remarkable scenes, the Greens supported the motion put to the WA upper house, highlighting issues with the legislation that has been brought to their attention including from GPs, conservation groups and the inability of aboriginal people to undertake hunting.

WA Continues Fight to Fix the Mess

The Western Australian Labor Government continues to reap what they sow in relation to their chaotic and misguided legislative changes related to fi****ms.

Motions are being put before parliament to disallow the Fi****ms Regulations 2024, and to direct the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Legislation to inquire into and report on the Fi****ms Act 2024.

This follows what has been described as “rushed processes, poor communication, and outright contempt for regional communities”, as well as concerns recently being raised by health professionals and providers of fi****ms storage equipment.

The Sporting Shooters’ Association of Australia joins national shooting groups in Canberra to strengthen united advocacy approach

On Wednesday, May 14, the Sporting Shooters’ Association of Australia (SSAA Inc.) took part in an important roundtable meeting in Canberra, hosted by the Shooting Industry Foundation of Australia (SIFA).

The gathering brought together key national organisations including SSAA, Shooters Union Australia, Field & Game Australia, IPSC Australia, Sporting Clays Australia, and the National Rifle Association of Australia.

The purpose of the meeting was to foster greater unity and coordination across the shooting community, ensuring a consistent and strategic approach to national fi****ms policy, advocacy, and representation.

Discussions focused on how representative bodies can work more effectively together to support the interests of licensed shooters, dealers, ranges, industry participants, and sporting shooters right across the country.

The SSAA remains committed to constructive engagement with fellow organisations on matters of shared concern. This collaborative effort will help protect the freedoms of responsible fi****ms owners and build a stronger voice for our community.

Ongoing planning and discussion will continue in the coming months, and SSAA looks forward to continuing this vital work alongside our peers in the shooting sports and fi****ms industry.
