5 years, untold hours repairing bizarre analog and digital format masters..listening to the things you feel like you've heard a trillion times before, but new and different...strangely unfamiliar. It's been a weird journey..but here goes.

To mark the 30th Anniversary of the release of the ‘Vertigo’ album, Boxcar and the Volition label join together to produce a special edition of the band's classic debut. Remastered and accompanied by unreleased never-heard-before mixes, ‘Vertigo Revibed’ highlights the crafted dance gems of Boxcar and production excellence of the late Robert Racic – both renowned reference points for Australian electronic/dance music following the worldwide release of ‘Vertigo’ in 1990.
BOXCAR formed in Brisbane in 1986, relocating to Sydney after signing with the trail-blazing Volition label in 1988 to begin work on their debut album ‘Vertigo’ with innovative Sydney DJ/producer Robert Racic. The first single from ‘Vertigo’ was released that same year, “Freemason” hit dance charts around the world including the U.S. where it went to #8 on the Billboard Dance Chart. It was followed by two more Billboard charting singles from ‘Vertigo’; “Gas Stop” #8 and “Insect” #20.
Following its release in 1990, ‘Vertigo’ captured an audience worldwide that craved the electronic dance sound that had dominated the 80’s. It also paved the way for a change in the perception of electronic/dance music from Australia and established Boxcar as pioneers in the movement and Racic as an acclaimed producer and remixer.
‘Vertigo’ was recorded, produced and mixed in Sydney, Vancouver and New York by Racic, with legendary dance music producers Arthur Baker and Francois Kevorkian enlisted to remix the singles “Freemason” and “Gas Stop” respectively.
Now in 2021, ‘Vertigo’ has been remastered and accompanied by unreleased never-heard-before mixes of six of the album’s tracks. These mixes; “Comet”, “Lelore”, “Hit & Run”, “Cruel To You” and “This Is The Town” are skilfully re-worked by Boxcar (with “Freemason” by Hysteric) from the restored original masters and highlight Racic’s exceptional talent in producing the electronic/dance music tour de force ‘Vertigo’.
In 2015, “Insect” claimed the #23 spot in the “100 Greatest Australian Dance Tracks Of All Time”. Published by online electronic/dance music bible ‘In The Mix’, Nick Jarvis wrote the following about Boxcar’s appearance on the chart; “...before Cut Copy, Van She et al reinvigorated ‘80s synth-pop to huge international success, Brisbane act Boxcar were struggling in a music market dominated by pub rockers like Diesel and pop stars like Kylie. Their debut album Vertigo spawned several synth-pop gems that impacted on the US dance charts – like the quirky, catchy, ice-cool“Insect”...it would be more than a decade before mass Australian audiences finally started appreciating home-grown electronic music.”
‘Vertigo Revibed’ is released through Volition on March 26th.
