THE POOL is now available WORLDWIDE !

You can rent or buy the award-winning feature documentary at Vimeo On Demand throughout the Americas, Asia, Europe and the UK. Link in comments!

The most photographed pool in the world, Bondi Icebergs Pool, is a character itself in a film which is a celebration of swimming and community.

THE POOL is a stunning cinematic experience with a soundtrack that harks back to the 1960s and a cast of characters who each have a story to tell; breezy, heart-warming, funny and poignant. It speaks to the enduring power of community and our collective longing to find it, whoever we are and wherever we come from. No matter your background or where you’re at — everyone is equal in their swimsuits.

THE POOL is a break away from impact filmmaking and into celebrating film and community – we were looking to make a film that would be more uplifting. Filmed at Bondi Icebergs Pool the film is a joy filled celebration of swimming, particularly of those winter and open water swimmers in the clubs based at the pool.

Ian Darling (Director) spoke in our screening Q&A events about the importance of places in communities “'The pool is a gathering place and it's so important. If you take away the heart of the community social problems emerge and the cost of health and everything goes through the roof. If you close pools, if you close cinemas, if you close local libraries and even local post offices you lose places where people can meet and chat.”

Premiering at Sydney Film Festival 2024, the documentary played at film festivals across Australia and New Zealand before a cinema release last summer. THE POOL won several festival awards and has been a hit with swimmers from all walks of life. We’re also supporting the Australian Float To Survive campaign - bringing water safety to all the communities around Australia.

Now you can watch the film on all streamers in Australia/New Zealand – stay tuned here for news next week about seeing the film internationally!

THE DEPARTMENT takes us inside the never-before-seen child protection system at work in New South Wales, Australia. Director Sascha Ettinger Epstein collaborates with the Shark Island team once again creating a thematic prequel to the films THE OASIS and LIFE AFTER THE OASIS, together the three make up our ‘homeless trilogy’. THE DEPARTMENT was produced with Noble Savage Pictures (Majhid Heath and Hayley B. Johnson) and was commissioned by SBS for Australia Uncovered.

Our thanks to the families and caseworkers who allowed us to follow their stories – even as Covid came and went, lockdowns imposed and lifted, people were generous and heartfelt in sharing their lives with us. Filmed in an observational style, THE DEPARTMENT follows caseworkers across the state as they navigate the complexities of keeping children safe in families experiencing domestic violence, addiction, poverty, mental health issues and intergenerational trauma. Told through the eyes of the caseworkers, complemented by the authentic voices of the families themselves, each story allows us to explore a different facet of child protection, revealing the complexity experienced in the lives of these people every day.

Ten years after THE OASIS was published, we started filming with some of the participants of that film for this sequel – LIFE AFTER THE OASIS.

THE OASIS Directors Sascha Ettinger Epstein and Ian Darling had remained in touch with some of the team, and others had moved on, or out of Sydney. Directed and filmed by Sascha, Owen, Emma, Chris and Darren speak frankly to her about the challenges facing them as they transitioned into adulthood. Viewers were most curious about what had happened to Hayley, had she survived her he**in habit? Robbin and Paul Moulds (now working Sydney’s Western Suburbs) were key in connecting with her by text – but would we find Hayley in person?

Featuring unseen footage from 2008 interwoven with contemporary 2019 footage, in LIFE AFTER THE OASIS Paul, Robbin, Owen, Darren, Chris, Emma and Ken share their stories of resilience and survival. You can view the film on Vimeo OnDemand, DocPlay, through Amazon, or educators can access the film and resources at the website https://theoasismovie.com.au

Together THE OASIS, LIFE AFTER THE OASIS and the film THE DEPARTMENT make up our ‘homeless trilogy’, looking at factors that contribute to youth becoming homeless, the experience of homelessness in Sydney 2005-2008 and the reflections of lived experience and the people working in child protection.

"My aim with this film is the same as that expressed in Adam Goodes’ Australian of the Year acceptance speech, when he said, “The real reward is when everyone is talking to their mates, to their families and to their children, having those conversations and educating others about racism. What it looks like, how hurtful and how pointless it is, and how we can eliminate it.”" Ian Darling, June 2019

THE FINAL QUARTER. Created from existing footage, radio and print media from the last three years of Adam Goodes career, the film has had an incredible impact since premiering at Sydney Film Festival, 2019.

Director Ian Darling says, "I felt it was important to hold a mirror up to the nation, to listen again to what was said and what had been heard."

Making time during post-production to share the film with AFL Clubs and their players was important - we wanted to ensure the Indigenous players and their teams knew the film and its content before release. We shared the film with community leaders, cultural leaders and past players in the weeks leading up to the premiere. Working with Roadshow, we secured a Channel Ten release, with a big audience tuning in on the back of media coverage between the festival and national broadcast.

Philanthropic partnerships and donor generosity supported our work with Reconciliation Australia, The Australian Human Rights Commission, Cool Australia, AToM and the AFL, providing the film and education resources to schools and clubs across Australia. THE FINAL QUARTER is also used in the corporate sector and workplaces to reduce casual racism in our communities.

Shark Island Productions and the AFL formed a major philanthropic partnership in 2022, expanding the films impact and tackling racism in sport. The partnership enabled key Peek Rule reforms and delivered a mandatory anti-vilification module, significantly improving policies and procedures for addressing vilification and discrimination at all levels of football. Funding also created new AFL roles, strengthening long-term commitment to inclusion and anti-racism.

Congratulations Shark Island Institute - 25 years!
"Shark Island Institute has been a shining light on the documentary landscape in Australia with contributions to impactful storytelling, generous commitment to the sector and nourishing support to filmmakers and artists.
What a legacy to be proud of. The range of stories – from hard hitting social issues like homelessness (The Oasis) and racism (The Final Quarter), to deep appreciation and celebration of artistic life with Paul Kelly – Stories of Me, In the Company of Actors and The Comedian. Thank you Sharkies for building community with The Pool and showing what’s possible with Alone Across Australia and Suzy and the Simple Man. You have not only tackled intractable social issues you have inspired, funded and walked alongside multiyear impact campaigns to create lasting change.
As the first and one of the only foundations in Australia to support documentary, your vision to create a new funding paradigm for documentary in the creation of Documentary Australia has changed the documentary funding landscape entirely. Shark Island Institute has inspired many other generous souls to give, and Ian’s personal leadership has given confidence to and inspired many. Generosity, warmth and long-term commitment is so precious. I have not met many with such unwavering commitment to the art form of documentary and what it can inspire. You walk the walk Sharkies and give us all food for the soul. Thank you. There is so much to be proud of."

SUZY & THE SIMPLE MAN was eight years in the making. Directed by Ian Darling, Suzan Muir and Jon Muir, the film started as a modest work with the working title “Our Little Garden”. It was to be shot over a year but then something unexpected happened and it became a documentary with un-simple questions at the heart of the story. The film premiered in 2016 at the Sydney Film Festival, and went on to screenings at MIFF, Mountainfilm Film Festival, Transitions Film Festival, Mountainfilm Graz and sustainability festivals including Ekotopfilm. You can watch it now on SBS OnDemand, DocPlay, vimeo on demand and streaming platforms.

Ian reflected on the film crediting three directors when the film was released: “We were going to take cameras down to ‘Inanna’ each season and shoot but we thought we’d get much more intimacy and honesty if it was just Jon and Suzy shooting themselves. We talked about story lines and what we were thinking but I asked them to be directors with me because they were shooting and making decisions that directly impacted the story. Suzy’s part of the story is very much her story and she’s done in it in a private and intimate way.”

"I like that they are directors with me" says Ian, "because with it comes a story-telling responsibility: it’s all care and all responsibility…. I think credit should be given where credit is due, and having three directors makes the film more exciting—if I was the only director, and telling them what to do, we wouldn’t have the magic we have.”

Suzy and Jon still live at Inanna, as sustainably as they can. They still guide walks and trips, and offer stays on the property at the edge of the Grampians, as Suzy says "An inspirationally delicious antidote to the cost of living crisis, the environmental love story continues…"
