Across the last 20 years, Conversations has captivated millions and dominated the podcast rankings.

Its immersive, human-centred approach to interviewing has told deeply personal stories of triumph, survival and heartbreak.

It’s a product of Conversations co-presenter Richard Fidler’s lifelong curiosity and innate thirst for knowledge.

“As a kid, I always wanted to know how my tiny speck of a life fitted into the great stream of events and people. I’ve been working on that ever since, really,” he said.

Before he became a gentle, empathetic voice on Conversations, Fidler was part of the satirical music trio, The Doug Anthony Allstars.

It was in this era that Fidler met his now wife of 32 years, Khym Fidler.

From the start of Conversations, Fidler saw “someone like Khym” as the show’s core listener — a smart, “bookish” mum at home with small kids.

And while he didn’t know it yet, Fidler was also talking to another stay-at-home mum; Sarah Kanowski, his future co-presenter.

Kanowski joined the show in 2018, with Fidler full of praise for his “witty” co-host and her “first-rate mind”.

Over the last two decades, between them, the pair have interviewed close to 3,200 guests from all walks of life.

The key to their success?

“Our curiosity is the engine of that hour. Otherwise, it's just a bloody long interview,” Fider said.

But there are lines they won’t cross. Early on, Fidler would ask some guests to recount their trauma in the name of truth-telling. He’s now more careful after it left him feeling “sad and sick” and dreading work.

“I don't mind making listeners uncomfortable, but I do mind mining that trauma, and tears, for its own sake.”

After 20 years behind the mic, does Fidler have any plans to hang up his hat? Not yet.

"It's quite a sustainable job, and I still love it. I get to find out something new all the time," he said.

“And I love the people I work with too. We're a very happy family in conversations.”

Perfectionism is a personality trait characterised by unrelenting high standards.

When perfectionists succeed, they are rewarded with a sense of control.

But seeking perfection can also manifest in avoidance according to psychologist Eileen Seah.

“You get people who are extremely paralysed by the fear of failure.”

Perfectionists are prone to procrastination because they’re avoiding performing badly, according to Ms Seah.

People usually think perfectionists are high achievers, but it’s not always the case.

And procrastination can prompt more self-criticism.

“It’s exhausting, constantly feeling the need to optimise, to do better and not actually ever feeling that you're good enough.”

Ms Seah encourages perfectionists to aim for good enough rather than perfect.

She says if the bar is a little lower, it might reduce your fear of failure, and in turn, the need to avoid.

When giving birth unlocks a new sense of self-love 👩‍🍼

Turia Pitt's body image took a hit after she suffered severe burns to 65 per cent of her body.

“I didn't like looking in the mirror,” she says.

Having kids was always part of the plan for Turia and her partner Michael, but the way it changed how she felt about her body was a beautiful surprise.

“I was in awe of what my body was capable of doing,” Turia says.

She has learned to live with the things that her body can't do due to the accident, but having a baby has given her a renewed appreciation for what it can.

“We can all think of a million different things that our body is s**t at or that we don't love, but I remind myself, 'Your body has given birth to two sons,'” Turia says.

“Your arms carry them; your legs walk them to school."

Zali Yager, from the body image charity Embrace Collective, conducted research into body image after birth and was surprised by what she found.

“We thought that women who had just gone through the process of growing a belly, giving birth, breastfeeding, the whole thing, we thought that they would be the most dissatisfied with their bodies, but actually they were much more likely to be appreciative of their bodies,” she says.
