20 YEARS! I realised this week that I’ve been doing My Vinyl Weighs a Ton for 20 years now. Because I remember early on cutting Kanye’s “George Bush Doesn’t Care About Black People” from Hurricane Katrina into the show because it was *topical*. So: I’ll be bringing you a series covering the years of the show - this week it’ll be the best of the first year - back when the show was mainly about the samples that built hip-hop; heavy funk; and gingerly dipping a toe into Afro-funk. So, we’re going to hit you with the EBONY RHYTHM FUNK CAMPAIGN, ZOO, CAMEO, and, to celebrate DOOMSDAY, a bit of early DOOM. And no coverage of the first 50 would be complete without this:

RIGHT NOW on edgeradio 99.3FM or whenever via the internets, we’re celebrating WOODY SHAW. No real reason. Well, I guess because I’ve a) finally tracked down a bunch of his 1970s albums and b) the penny has dropped about how KOZMIGROOVY he was. Innovative trumpeter, he did a bunch of relatively straight work but his catalogue really shines in a run of heavyweight 1970s spiritual jazz albums that are all hugely deserving of the reissue treatment. We’re hitting you with ‘New World’ from 1971’s BLACKSTONE LEGACY; ‘The Awakening’ from the 1973 LP ‘Song of Songs’ , (Horace) ‘Tapscott’s Blues’ from 1975’s “The Moontrane” LP; ‘Love Dance’ from the album of the same name from 1976, and a live ‘Bilad as Sudan’ from The Berliner Jazztage in 1977!

TONIGHT! 7-8PM on your radio dial. Sometimes I have a new 'discovery' during the week and build a show around that - but this week we have TWO things that I'm really excited about - trumpeter LONGINEU PARSONS who played spiritual jazz in that Strata East / Nimbus West vein had an incredible self-titled album in 1980. and bass player JORGE LOPEZ RUIZ who recorded an ode to his home town of Buenos Aires in 1971. Turn your dial over to 99.3 and check it out!

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

FUSION is not a dirty word. Well, not *always*. Triggered by the one good thing I picked up at the record fair on the weekend, tonight’s show is focussing in on the combination of URSZULA DUDZIAK and MICHAL URBANIAK - her of the 5+ octave vocal range and a tendency toward advanced s**t, him of the forward thinking violin and saxophone - created a bundle of the best Polish fusion in their respective albums as leaders and in other groups. Stick around for some crazy sounds!

BASE FOR YOUR FACE! Public Enemy released ‘It Takes a Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back’ on June 28, 1988 and blew up everyone’s ideas of what hip-hop could be. They just released a NEW album on the anniversary - Black Sky over the Projects. We’ll be playing a bit of PE, but also new Australian and New Zealand Spiritual Jazz, funky library sounds, and MORE
