Six weeks after coming second in the interbreed cattle competition at the Ekka in Brisbane, GD Livestock stud principal Travis Worth, Singleton, NSW, won supreme champion Charolais at the Melbourne Royal Show.

Mr Worth's three-year-old Charolais cow took home the top ribbon with a calf at foot.

It was the first time he had shown cattle at Melbourne, and he said it had been well worth the travel.

After the heartbreak of seeing their bees euthanised following the detection of varroa mite in sentinel hives at the Port of Newcastle in June 2022, local beekeepers are buzzing with joy with their new chemical-free mite management equipment.

Thanks to a $6,300 donation from Yancoal Australia's Mount Thorley Warkworth (MTW) operation, the Hunter Valley Amateur Beekeepers Association was able to purchase Varroa Controller Biosecurity Protection Equipment to help manage Varroa mites in their hives.

After just 12 months of production the Dartbrook underground mine near Aberdeen is expected to be placed in 'care and maintenance'.

Muswellbrook Mayor Jeff Drayton said putting Dartbrook in care and maintenance at this stage is the worst possible move.

"You can't seriously expect to sell a mine or make the case for an extension when you've just halted operations," he said.
"One of these companies is worth half a trillion dollars, yet somehow Muswellbrook Shire is left with the burden.

"These operators owe years of unpaid rates to Council."

There was a sense of joy in the room as members of a small Upper Hunter environment group gathered to hear from the legal team that had won a significant victory on their behalf.

The gathering attracted other community members interested in hearing from the barristers and solicitors who represented the Denman, Aberdeen, Muswellbrook, Scone Health Environment Group (DAMSHEG) in their successful appeal against a planning approval in the NSW Supreme Court.

THREE girls have been flown to hospital with serious injuries after a car crashed down an embankment in the Upper Hunter and caught fire on Monday.

A large emergency operation began to unfold from about 9.30am on September 29 when the calls for help came in about a single car crash on Bunnan Road at Scone.

An Ambulance NSW spokesperson a vehicle had crashed down an embankment before catching alight.

One girl is critical, two are serious, and two men suffered minor injuries, paramedics say.

Musawellbrook's Bengalla Mining Company has won three major awards at the Hunter Valley Mines Rescue Open Cut Competition, where emergency response teams went head-to-head in a series of high-pressure, real-world mining emergency simulations.

Bengalla Mining Company, owned by New Hope, was crowned Overall Champions, took home the Ambulance Shield for excellence in first aid, with Scott Fulloon also recognised as the Best Captain.
