There’s double the action at Bartlett Park this weekend with Extreme Steer Wrestling and Breakaway Roping on Friday night and all the spills and thrills with the annual rodeo on Saturday.
Australia’s best steer wrestlers descend on Kelso on Friday for the Townsville leg of the Extreme Steering Wrestling national circuit and local event organiser Luke Ford said the event was a leap of faith off a galloping horse.
“You climb off your perfectly good horse and grab a 250kg steer by the horns and throw it to the ground,” he said.
He said they were expecting up to 30 competitors including current and former national champions to nominate for the event.
“Most of the guys that are in the top 10 in the national standings at the moment will be coming up for it such as Australian champions Ryley Gibb from Charters Towers and previous champions like Gavin Walker from Victoria,” he said.
Then on Saturday it’s time for the annual rodeo with all the classic rodeo events plus the first time - Women’s Ranch Bronc.
Bartlett Park Rodeo secretary Evelyn Dobbins said the Ranch Bronc was the female version of the Saddle Bronc event.
The Extreme Steer Wrestling Australia event starts at 5pm on June 19 and the Bartlett Park Rodeo on June 20 from 10am.
