🎉 A huge THANK YOU to everyone who submitted to V40 Legacy – what a year it's been!

This volume is extra special as we celebrate a major milestone for Verandah Literary and Art Journal – Volume 40! We're honoured to hit this milestone with such an incredible and creative community behind us.

✨ We received around 250 submissions (wow!), and while we wish we could publish everyone, our team has the tough job of narrowing it down. So, over the coming weeks, keep an eye on your inbox – we’ll be sending out acceptance and rejection emails.
📢 We'll also post on our socials when those emails are out, so if you submitted, stay tuned and stay sharp 👀

🏆 Prize winners will be announced closer to our launch, and trust us – we’re cooking up something exciting. If you're a winner, you'll hear from us again with all the juicy details. 👀🎊

We’re extending submissions by one week 🎉 That’s right—submissions now close 11:59pm AEST, Thursday 4 July.

Why? Because we’ve just added some seriously juicy prizes to the mix:

This prize honours a standout piece of creative nonfiction that captivates, challenges, and showcases the brilliance of real-life narratives told with style and imagination.

We’re beyond excited to welcome Autumn Royal as our guest judge for this year's prize. Based in Melbourne, Autumn is a dynamic force in the literary world - a teaching fellow at Deakin University, accomplished author, and thoughtful researcher. Her poetic work, including the striking collection She Woke & Roses, explores rich emotional landscapes and leaves readers absolutely spellbound. With her blend of academic insight and artistic vision, Autumn is the perfect voice to guide this prize.

We’re beyond thrilled to announce The Unbound Prize – a bold celebration of creativity that dares to defy convention. This award honours a single piece that breaks boundaries, colours outside the lines, and embraces the wild, the weird, and the wonderfully unexpected.

To judge this thrilling prize, we’ve enlisted none other than the phenomenal Jodi McAlister. Jodi brings a powerhouse combination of academic insight and creative flair. Based in Melbourne, she’s a Senior Lecturer in Writing and Literature at Deakin University – and she’s just released her ninth novel, the deliciously sharp romcom An Academic Affair, which will leave your heart and bookshelf craving more.
