The king answered Araunah, “No, I insist on buying it from you for a price, for I will not offer to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”
True worship requires a personal cost: David understood that a genuine offering to God demands a sacrifice from the giver, involving actual personal time, energy, or resources rather than what is merely convenient or "leftover"
David refused to take the easy way out. He wanted the act of repentance and devotion to be completely his, funded by his own expense
He says, “I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God, which cost me nothing.”
* In other words, it’s not a sacrifice to the Lord if there has been no cost counted!
* And in the same way, how can pursuing Christ in all things not cost you something of great value, whether time, treasure, or the like.
MATTHEW 6:21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
So, David, in turn pays Araunah 50 shekels of silver which is about $1,067 in US Dollars.
And from this great sacrifice, David built the altar to the Lord. He offered up his burnt offerings in order to atone for his sins against Yahweh And made peace offerings to renew fellowship with God.
