Welcome to Issue 21
This issue is packed with hours of absorbing reading
We have an exclusive interview with artist Stormie Mills, discussing his exhibition titled "Once Upon a Sometimes" at the FORM Gallery. This show featured the unique and evocative work of Mills, who is known for his distinctive urban art style through character-driven artworks. His pieces often explore themes of isolation, hope, and the human condition, blending elements of street art with a more introspective narrative. The interview and art delves into his personal struggle with the “black dog”
The olive oil industry in Western Australia is a rapidly growing sector within the state's agricultural and gourmet food scene. We take a first-hand look from the perspective of a local grower. Western Australia's climate, particularly in regions like the Swan Valley, Margaret River, and parts of the Great Southern, is ideal for olive cultivation, with Mediterranean-like conditions that support high-quality olive production.
We review the exhibition by Sandra Black, a Western Australian potter of international acclaim, at the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Sandra is renowned for her delicate and intricate porcelain pieces, often characterized by detailed pierced and carved patterns. Her work blends traditional pottery techniques with contemporary artistic expressions, creating vessels that are both functional and sculptural.
There’s a review of the WA Museum's exhibition titled "Spinifex People: Art and Stories from Pila Nguru" which focuses on the rich cultural heritage and artistry of the Pila Nguru or Spinifex people, an Indigenous community from the Great Victoria Desert region in Western Australia.
And of course we update what’s new in Design News and a focus on eating local in Western Australia.
This issue promises much more content on local arts, culture, and the design industry.

Welcome to Issue 20 of Fabric Quarterly.

We delve into all aspects that showcase the creative spirit that defines Western Australia.

Our feature on one of the projects of Iwan Iwanoff, the visionary Brutalist architect of the 60’s and 70’s offers a deep dive into one of his most iconic designs. His designs are not merely structures; they are statements of artistic integrity and innovation that flow from his developmental years in his country of birth, Bulgaria arguably the home of Brutalist design, with its roots in functionality and serviceability.

In contrast to the stark lines of Iwanoff’s work we knock on the door of Chicho Gelato’s new kitchen/laboratory and shop. It highlights the fusion of tradition and modernity that defines Chicho. The founders have created a space that is as innovative as their flavours, combining cutting edge-culinary techniques with passion and creativity. Their new hub is not just a space to enjoy gelato; it’s an immersive experience that invites patrons to witness the artistry behind each scoop.

… and lots lots more.

As always Fabric is committed to bringing you stories of community, culture, creativity and craftsmanship. We hope that this issue not only informs you but also inspires you to explore the unique blend of tradition and innovation that makes Western Australia so special.

Thank you to all our family of contributors and supporters.
