🎙️ NEW CANTER THERAPY PODCAST: MARY SARGEANT

We have wanted to get Mary Sargeant from Equine Bodyworks by Mary Sargeant onto the podcast for quite some time, and this conversation certainly didn’t disappoint.

Mary is funny, candid, incredibly observant and thoroughly interesting. She has spent years working hands-on with horses, studying anatomy and watching how horses use their bodies, and she is always prepared to question what we think we know.

We talk about anatomy, pain, compensation, dissections, rehabilitation, riding and bodywork, but we also get into some much bigger questions about how we interpret horses and their behaviour.

One of my favourite observations from Mary was, “We look at our relationship with the horse and we forget the horse’s relationship with us.” That opens up a fascinating discussion about what horses have actually learned about humans and what our presence and behaviour mean to them.

We also tackle regulation, choice and consent, with Mary making the wonderfully provocative observation: “When a horse feels in danger, it needs to move. When a human feels scared by the horse, we want them to stand still.”

Mary also tells us about her brilliant Easy Equine Anatomy books and her mission to make anatomy accessible to ordinary horse people without drowning them in complicated terminology.

There is a tonne to ponder in this episode. You may agree with Mary, you may disagree with her, but I suspect she will make you think and perhaps look at your own horse a little differently.❤️

🎙️ NEW CANTER THERAPY PODCAST EPISODE🐴

What if some of the things we consider “normal” in horses are simply assumptions we’ve repeated for so long that we’ve stopped questioning them?

My guest for this episode is the wonderfully curious Monique Craig, CEO and co-founder of EponaMind.

And yes, we talk about hooves. But this conversation went somewhere much bigger.

We talk about biomechanics, soundness, symmetry, riding, training, science, intuition, expertise, nature and our very human desire to control things.

One of the things I loved most about talking with Monique is that she is prepared to sit with complexity.

Barefoot or shod? It depends.

Science or intuition? We need both, and we need to be critical of both.

Symmetry? Nature might have something to say about our obsession with making everything straight and equal.

Training? Perhaps we need to think less about controlling the horse and more about understanding what is actually happening underneath us.

This episode is really about curiosity. About being willing to question what we have been taught, look more closely at the horse in front of us, and occasionally admit that what we once thought was obvious might not be quite so obvious after all.

🎙️NEW CANTER THERAPY PODCAST EPISODE- Itch, Allergies, Asthma & Greasy Heel with Dr Talia Morgan

Why is one horse constantly itchy while another is completely unaffected? And could allergies be behind problems like head shaking, coughing, poor performance or changes in behaviour?

In this fantastic episode, Shelley and Kat are joined by Equine Dermatology Vet Dr Talia Morgan from Veterinary Dermatology Specialists in Western Australia to unpack the surprisingly complex world of equine allergies and skin disease.

We explore Queensland itch, the fascinating "allergy bucket", asthma, head shaking, greasy heel, skin-barrier health, allergy testing and immunotherapy, plus loads of practical advice for everyday horse management.
This episode is packed with those wonderful "I didn't know that!" moments and may completely change the way you think about your horse's skin.

🎙️ NEW CANTER THERAPY PODCAST: The Science, Art & Humility of Horsemanship with Peter Cowell

Peter Cowell is one of my favourite people to talk horses with.

He has an incredible mind. He is deeply curious, listens to other horsemen and, importantly, listens to what the thousands of horses he has worked with have taught him.

Conversations with Peter make you look deeper.

In this episode, we explore how horsemanship develops in layers. How experience changes what we are able to see. How an expert may appear to be doing something quite simple, or even “wrong”, when they are actually responding to something the less experienced eye cannot yet see.

And I gave Peter some homework.

After our last conversation, I asked him to explain how he teaches a young horse to tie up.

Tying is potentially one of the riskiest parts of a young horse’s education. Peter has broken the problem apart: What does the horse need to understand first? Where can it go wrong? What skills can we teach beforehand to reduce the risk? And how do we put those pieces together before we actually tie the horse?

It is a fascinating example of how a highly experienced horseman thinks about training.

Peter doesn't just tell you *what he does*. He helps you understand *what he sees*.

As Peter says, horsemanship is:

“Part science, part art and part humility.”

🎧 **The Science, Art & Humility of Horsemanship with Peter Cowell** is out now on the Canter Therapy Podcast.

And check the show notes for a short video of Peter demonstrating his tying-up approach with a young horse. It brings this fascinating discussion to life.

📣NEW EPISODE: Bits, Basics & Better Horsemanship with Daniel Dauphin

Daniel Dauphin of Dauphin Horsemanship and host of The Adult Onset Horsemanship Podcast is back on Canter Therapy, and this time we dive deep into bits, bitting, rider hands and the foundations we often overlook in our horses.

Daniel joins Shelley and Kat ahead of his upcoming Australian and New Zealand clinic tour in October-November 2026, to unpack how bits actually work, why a bitting problem isn't always a bit problem, the importance of mouth anatomy, and why sophisticated bits should be about increasingly subtle communication, not stronger control.

We also explore retraining off-the-track horses, why cows can be such valuable teachers, the connection between the mouth, relaxation and movement, double bridles, rider fear, and why sometimes the answer to an advanced training problem lies much further back in the basics.

Whether you ride English, Western, dressage, cutting, trails or anything in between, this is a fascinating conversation about becoming more thoughtful, skilled and effective with horses.

NEW EPISODE IS UP‼📣

🐴 Are you worming your horse based on evidence... or habit?

Most of us grew up hearing that horses should simply be wormed every six to eight weeks.

But modern research tells a very different story.

In our latest Canter Therapy Podcast episode, we're joined by Professor Caroline Jacobson from Murdoch University, one of Australia's leading experts in parasite management and co-author of the Australian Equine Internal Parasite Management Guidelines.

We explore:
✔ Why traditional worming programs have changed
✔ How drug resistance develops
✔ What worm egg counts actually tell you
✔ Why foals need different management to adult horses
✔ Practical paddock strategies that reduce parasite burdens
✔ The myths horse owners still believe

This is a fascinating conversation that could completely change the way you think about parasite management.

🎙 NEW Canter Therapy Podcast Episode⭐️

Some podcasts teach you something new.

Others completely change how you look at horses.

This is one of those episodes.

We sat down with Dr Jane Clothier to discuss her groundbreaking PhD research into premature and developmentally immature foals, and the lifelong effects these early beginnings can have on soundness, behaviour, learning, stress responses and performance.

It's a conversation that challenges many assumptions we've held for years.

- If you've ever wondered why some horses develop arthritis young...
- Why some seem unusually reactive...
- Why others never quite progress despite excellent training...

This episode offers a fascinating new perspective.

Jane also introduces her new book, Managing the Miracle Foal, which translates years of scientific research into practical guidance for breeders and horse owners.

Whether you're involved in breeding, training, rehabilitation or simply want to understand horses better, this is an episode worth listening to.

*Interview with Josh Nichol | Relational Horsemanship*

If you already know Josh Nichol, you'll be excited about this conversation.

If you haven't discovered Josh yet, you're in for a treat. He is one of the most thoughtful, insightful, and thought-provoking horsemen I've had the pleasure of speaking with, and this conversation left me reflecting long after we stopped recording.

In this fascinating episode, we explore some of the key ideas shaping Josh's approach to horses, people, and performance, including:

✅ Why behaviour is often a symptom, not the cause
✅ The difference between lightness and true softness
✅ Mind, space, and pressure
✅ Liberty, leadership, and connection
✅ Soundness, tension, and movement
✅ Why understanding the horse's experience changes everything

Whether you're interested in horse behaviour, training, performance, or simply becoming a better horseperson, this conversation is full of ideas that will challenge assumptions and make you think differently about horses.

🐎 NEW PODCAST EPISODE 🎙️

Why do some off-the-track Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds thrive in their second careers while others struggle?

In this episode of the Canter Therapy Podcast, I sit down with Isabelle Chandler to explore the often-missing link between racing and riding horse life.

Together, we discuss:
✅ Why so many OTTBs and Standardbreds are misunderstood
✅ The surprising ways racing associations influence behaviour
✅ Why "crazy racehorses" are often simply confused horses
✅ The role of pain, stress, feet, gut health, and management
✅ Why educating the person is just as important as retraining the horse
✅ How our Racehorse to Riding Horse: Off-the-Track Reboot program helps create safer, more successful transitions

One of the biggest lessons from this project?
These horses aren't broken. They're professionals changing careers.

If you love Thoroughbreds, Standardbreds, retraining, or helping horses succeed in their next chapter, this is an episode you won't want to miss.

NEW CANTER THERAPY PODCAST EPISODE 🎙️🐴

This episode is something really special.

We sat down with the incredibly wise and multi-passionate Lyn Jenkin for a fascinating conversation about horses, life, learning, creativity, and women’s health.

We dive into the extraordinary story of Django, the legendary Friesian stallion who became the first Friesian in Australia to compete at official Grand Prix level. His story is unforgettable.

But this episode also explores something deeply important beyond horses.

Lyn shares her personal journey with lipoedema, a commonly misunderstood and underdiagnosed condition that affects many women. This conversation honestly opened our eyes, and we hope it helps others who may have been silently struggling or searching for answers.

This episode is full of wisdom, humour, emotion, and thoughtful conversations.

We absolutely loved this conversation and think you will too.
