Australia’s new national emergency warning system, AusAlert, was tested nationwide today, with compatible devices receiving a critical test notification at approximately 2:00 pm AEST. The system uses cell-broadcast technology to send location-based warnings through active 4G and 5G mobile networks.

While many Australians received the alert, others reported that their phones remained silent. According to the National Emergency Management Agency, possible reasons include an incompatible device, outdated software, no connection to a mobile tower at the time, network differences, device settings or the person’s exact location. No action is required if the test did not reach your device.

The test is designed to identify coverage gaps and improve the system before AusAlert becomes operational in October 2026.
