Cheersquad Records & Tapes is proud to announce the release of 'Joy', a brand new 4–track EP by Stephen Cummings, available on limited edition cream 12" vinyl (100 only), black 12" vinyl and digital formats.

'Joy' revisits songs originally recorded at various times between 1971 and 2021 by four iconic Australian acts — Spectrum, Pel Mel, Jess Ribeiro and Dag — but here they are reborn through Stephen Cummings’ interpretations, newly recorded in 2025.

Produced by longtime collaborator Robert Goodge, these versions carry Stephen’s unmistakable voice and presence, enriched by an extraordinary ensemble:
• Stephen Cummings — vocals
• Leah & Andi Senior — harmony vocals
• Robert Goodge — acoustic guitar, mandolin, keyboards
• Sam Lemann — acoustic & electric guitars
• Graham Lee — pedal steel
• Bill McDonald — bass, keyboard sounds
• Michael Davis — drums & percussion

The EP’s four tracks span five decades of Australian songwriting:
1. Living in the Balance (Dusty Anastassiou, 2021 – originally by Dag)
2. Unfamiliar Ground (Jess Ribeiro, 2015)
3. No Word from China (Jude McGee & Graeme Dunne, 1980 – originally by Pel Mel)
4. Fly Without Its Wings (Mike Rudd, 1971 – originally by Spectrum)
The result is a record that bridges generations of Australian music with fresh intimacy and resonance. The dreamy harmonies of sisters Leah and Andi Senior add an ethereal texture that lifts Cummings’ interpretations into luminous new territory. Joy is both a tribute and a reinvention, breathing new life into remarkable songs and carrying them forward in Stephen Cummings’ deeply personal style.

'Rose City', the first taste of The Silversound's forthcoming second album, is a sonic love letter from the band to Rose City Band from Portland.

A swirling psychedelic paean, produced by the band's Shane O'Mara, it is a euphoric 10-minute devotional offering of Krautrock groove, blissful harmonies from sublime Loretta Miller, snaking guitar, and cosmic country flourishes.

"I saw Rose City Band in an inner-west venue in Melbourne last year. I’d not heard their music but was encouraged by many to see them after they played at a small festival a few days before. I walked in, the lights went down, they strolled out and began to play," recalls O'Mara.

"I was immediately hooked. This beautiful wall of sound filled the room. A few songs in, I felt I was privy to some kind of sonic mad hatter’s tea party, a psychedelic, blissful buffet of Floyd, Kraftwerk, Dead Headed joy … long songs, cosmic pedal steel, wild Moog solos, dreamy, phased guitar, a gentle melody blended and swirled … I was immersed and captivated … I started writing my ode/love letter the next day."

The Silversound launch 'Rose City' on Saturday 13 December at the Union Hotel in Brunswick, 8.30pm start.

Shane O’Mara, maestro guitarist, has played/recorded with Paul Kelly, Tim Rogers, Lisa Miller, Rob Snarski, Chris Wilson and many more.

Andrew Tanner (vocals, guitar) is a founding member of Seven Stories and with Leroy Cope (drums) key member of psyche band Sand Pebbles and The Woodland Hunters.

Multi-instrumentalist Stu Thomas (bass) is a member of Kim Salmon and the Surrealists, Dave Graney & the Mistly, and he fronts his voodoo surf band The Stu Thomas Paradox.

All masters of their craft, they coalesce in The Silversound.

ALBUM OUT TODAY - LAUNCH SHOWS THIS WEEKEND!

A long-revered force in Australia’s alt-country and roots scene, Suzannah Espie has spent over three decades blazing a trail with her smoky vocals, soul-baring lyrics, and electric stage presence. With the November 14 re-release of her acclaimed 2012 album Sea of Lights, a whole new generation of listeners is invited into the world of a woman who makes music with guts, grace, and zero regard for playing it safe.

From her early days as a founding member of the beloved all-female trio GIT, through to a thriving solo career that’s spanned continents and genres, Espie has always made art on her own terms. Her third solo album, Sea of Lights, recorded live and raw with the all-star accompaniment of Jeff Lang, Liz Stringer and Chris Altmann while she was seven months pregnant, captured her in full flight — powerful, open-hearted, and creatively unfiltered. The album earned Rhythms Magazine’s Album of the Year, a top 15 spot in The Age EG’s Best Albums of 2012, and the much-loved Nani Award from RRR broadcasters Dave Graney and Elizabeth McCarthy.

Sea of Lights will be available for the first time on vinyl on 14 November 2025, you can get your copy now. It is available on red & white marble 12" vinyl, black 12" vinyl and digitally.

https://cheersquadrecordstapes.bandcamp.com/album/sea-of-lights

While she's hardly been prolific, Espie's work since Sea Of Lights has only deepened her legacy. She’s earned accolades including MBAS Blues Performer of the Year (2007), Port Fairy Folk Festival Artist of the Year (2013), and Vic Music Awards' Best Folk Album (2016). She’s toured extensively across Australia and the U.S., and shared stages with icons like Archie Roach, Renee Geyer, Kasey Chambers and Arlo Guthrie. In recent years has been an integral member of The Cartridge Family and The Junes, releasing over ten albums between 2010 and 2025.

Described as “a national treasure” and “one of Australia’s most distinctive voices,” Espie’s work resonates with fire, tenderness, and defiance — the kind of music that refuses to apologise, just like the woman who makes it. Tender, sharp-witted, and soul-stirring, her songs speak to love, grief, power, aging, motherhood and survival with a depth only lived experience can bring.

Suzannah and her band The Last Word will commemorate the release with a weekend of shows - Friday November 14 and Saturday November 15 at the Lomond Hotel, and Sunday Nov 16 at Archies Creek Hotel, get your tickets now.

Out today – the new single and video ‘Not Expecting To Fly’ from Davey Lane’s latest solo album ‘Finally, A Party Record.’

The ‘70s blue-eyed soul of ‘Not Expecting To Fly’ is one of many love letters to Lane’s eclectic tastes. “I’ve not really written a song like that before,” he laughs, “and it probably doesn't come as too much of a surprise that I was listening to a bit of Hall & Oates at the time.”
The video is a visual explosion – just watch it.
