This is one of my favourite types of tech story.

Company launches shiny new feature.

People immediately say, “Hang on a minute…”

Company quietly backs away. 😆

When Meta launched its Muse Image tool in July, one feature allowed people to reference public Instagram accounts when generating images.

The reaction wasn’t great.

Within days, Meta said the feature had “missed the mark” and removed it.

And I actually think there’s a useful reminder in that.

Just because a huge tech company launches something doesn’t mean it’s automatically a brilliant idea.

Users push back.

Features change.

Plans get reversed.

Sometimes the internet does, in fact, yell loudly enough. 😂

Facebook Marketplace has officially reached the “you get your own app” stage. 😆

Meta launched a separate Seller app in July for people who sell heavily through Marketplace.

It includes things like inventory management, a unified inbox, performance insights and AI-assisted listing creation.

Before Australian Marketplace sellers start searching the App Store though — the initial release is for US users.

Still, I find the direction interesting.

Marketplace started as people clearing out the spare room.

Now, for some people, it’s a genuine side hustle or business.

Not bad for the place where someone once offered you $8 and asked if you could deliver it 40 kilometres away. 😂

We talk about “engagement” ALL the time on social media.

But the word has been around considerably longer than likes and comments.

Engage comes through Old French engagier, meaning to pledge, bind or involve.

Over time, it developed into the idea of occupying somebody’s attention or involving them in something.

Which is actually a much better way to think about social media engagement.

It isn’t just counting reactions.

It’s getting somebody interested enough to stop, think, respond, click, comment or join the conversation.

Turns out the original meaning is probably more useful than the dashboard metric. 😆

Here’s an Australian social media number worth knowing.

Meta says it had removed access to more than 750,000 Facebook and Instagram accounts it assessed as belonging to Australians under 16 by the end of June.

That follows Australia’s social media minimum-age rules coming into effect last December.

For most small businesses, this isn’t a reason to tear up the content plan and start again.

But it is a reminder that audiences change for reasons that have nothing to do with an algorithm update.

If your business traditionally speaks to teenagers, young people or families, changes like this matter.

Social media doesn’t operate in its own little bubble.

Sometimes what happens outside Meta changes what happens inside it.

Instagram has another feature.

I know. Try to contain your excitement. 😂

It’s called Instants.

You take the photo there and then. No choosing the best one from your camera roll and no editing it first.

You can send it to Close Friends or mutual followers, and once they’ve viewed it, it disappears. It can’t be viewed after 24 hours either.

Could a business use it?

Definitely.

A delivery arriving. Setting up for an event. Something funny happening behind the scenes. A quick glimpse at what’s happening right now.

Would I rearrange an entire social media strategy around it?

Not a chance.

You’re allowed to look at a new Instagram feature and decide, “That’s nice” before carrying on with your day. 😆

Persona is one of those words we use constantly in business without thinking much about where it came from.

It’s Latin.

Persona originally meant a mask or character — particularly the role somebody presented to an audience.

Sound familiar? 😏

These days, we use it to describe the identity or version of ourselves that other people see.

And in marketing, a “customer persona” is the fictional profile we create to better understand who we’re actually talking to.

So yes, even our modern audience research has roots in people putting on masks.

I rather like that. 😆

Seen people talking about Facebook’s Creator Assistant and gone looking for it?

And looking.

And looking.

Before deciding Meta must be hiding it specifically from you? 😆

Probably not.

Creator Assistant can look at a creator’s own content, audience and performance and help explain what worked, suggest ideas and answer follow-up questions.

Sounds useful.

There is, however, one small detail.

The first rollout was to creators in the US, Canada and India, with other countries to follow.

This happens constantly with Meta.

Someone posts a tutorial saying:

“Simply click the button at the top…”

Meanwhile you’re staring at your screen thinking:

WHAT BUTTON, SUSAN?

Sometimes nothing is broken.

Meta just hasn’t invited you to the party yet. 😂

Today’s word rabbit hole is one we blame for quite a lot around here.

Algorithm.

You’d be forgiven for thinking the word came from Silicon Valley.

Not even close.

It traces back to the ninth-century mathematician Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi, whose work on arithmetic was translated and widely circulated.

Over time, his name helped give us the word we now use for a set of rules or processes used to solve a problem.

Which means centuries of mathematics eventually brought us to:

“Why did my post only get 37 views? THE ALGORITHM HATES ME.”

What a legacy. 😂

We now have Facebook Verified AND Meta Verified.

Because straightforward naming would obviously be far too easy. 😂

Facebook Verified is a newer, free verification badge designed to show there’s a real person behind a Facebook profile.

The process uses a short video selfie and compares it with the profile photos already on the account.

A couple of important points though.

It’s for eligible personal profiles — not pages or Professional Mode accounts.

And it’s being rolled out gradually, so don’t panic if you can’t see it.

Also, that little tick confirms Facebook has verified a real person is behind the profile.

It does not mean Facebook is personally endorsing their character, judgement or ability to return borrowed Tupperware.

Common sense still required. 😉
