How did 18th-century periodicals shape modern journalism, public discourse, and the idea of the intellectual as a cultural figure? In this episode, philosopher Stephen Harrop interviews Quillette’s Managing Editor Iona Italia about her book Anxious Employment: The Rise of Literary Journalism in the Eighteenth Century.

Together they explore the origins of literary journalism in Enlightenment London, the decline of censorship, and how coffee houses and tea tables became incubators for public reason and debate. They unpack the influence of periodicals like The Tatler, The Spectator, and The Rambler by figures like Richard Steele and Samuel Johnson—linking them to today’s Substack writers, blog culture, and even Twitter personas.

They also examine the role of women writers in this emerging media ecosystem, from Delarivier Manley to Frances Brooke, and how pseudonymous personae gave voice to both social critique and moral philosophy.

This wide-ranging conversation bridges philosophy, history, media studies, gender, and cultural criticism—with references to Aristotle, Adam Smith, David Hume, and Samuel Johnson’s vision of empathy and moral instruction in a fragmented society.
