The feed produced by Lucerne is both high in both quantity and quality. Like with most high-quality feeds produced, some animal health concern exists. The most serious of these when it comes to Lucerne is bloat.

Adding chicory to the mix for paddocks allocated for grazing only will help prevent any risk of bloat. Chicory contains condensed tannins. Condensed tannins contain components which prevent the formation of foam in the rumen (Jones et al. 1973). This reduces the likelihood of animals suffering from frothy bloat, even in situations where animals have access to bloat causing legumes (McMahon et al., 2000).

Adding chicory will not suite anyone looking to bale hay as the leaf will turn dark and mouldy during the drying phase, but it is suitable for grazing and silage. The sowing ratio of Lucerne : Chicory is normally 80 : 20 but a higher ratio of Chicory can be added.

We are carrying several different Lucerne varieties and dormancy ratings in stock, as well as perennial chicory varieties such as Puna II and Choice. Orders can be placed for any specific requests.

If you’re considering sowing a brassica, plan ahead and get a soil pH test done.

Brassicas can handle a broad range of pH levels, from 4.6 – 8.6 although 5.6 – 6.2 (CaCl2) is ideal. Brassica crops like good soil P levels. So, MAP or DAP are the preferred starter fertilisers. Sow into a w**d free seedbed. Spray any existing w**ds with glyphosate and tank mix with insecticide to control any pests pre cultivation and consider a pre-emergent application of Trifluralin.

Brassicas respond well to a nitrogen application during the initial growth phase and following each grazing. Broadleaf w**ds can be handled using Clopyralid (eg. Lontrel Advanced®), while grass w**ds can be controlled using Haloxyfop (eg. Verdict 520®) and Clethodim before canopy closure. Be sure to monitor for insects. Brassicas are susceptible to RLEM, Aphids, Diamondback moths and White Butterfly.

Like with all high-quality forages, before introducing livestock give your animals a 5 in 1 vaccination to prevent red-gut.

Seed supplies are available with some brassica varieties being carried in store.

Please contact Scott at the store for more information on varieties and a stocking rate calculator can be provided.
