🇲🇼 Peter Mutharika Sworn In as Malawi’s President at 85 — A Comeback for the Ages

In a stunning political return, Peter Mutharika has been sworn in as President of Malawi following his victory in the September election. At 85 years old, the veteran leader stages a remarkable comeback.

Thousands gathered at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre for the inauguration — a symbolic moment for a country in economic and political flux.

This return marks Mutharika’s second time in office, following his previous term from 2014 to 2020.

🔍 What’s Next for Malawi

Mutharika won with 56% of the vote, defeating incumbent Lazarus Chakwera, who earned ~33%

He’s taking office during a severe economic crisis: inflation, food and fuel shortages, foreign exchange tensions, and climate pressures loom large.

His inauguration speech pledges “hard work, tough decisions,” and a crackdown on corruption.

Among his early moves, he’s appointed Joseph Mwanamvekha as Finance Minister.

✅ Why This Matters

This isn’t just a political change — it’s a dramatic reentry into leadership against all odds. At 85, Mutharika is redefining the limits of public service longevity in Africa. His leadership will be tested by high expectations, economic turmoil, and an electorate demanding transformation.
