We’re in peak Covid time now, so I managed to slave away in the garage to ensure this conversion come to fruition. In the end it was a success. Sure it had its teething issues for 6 months after the fact but all in all it was a stout package. ⠀

It made all the right noises, a decent amount of power and ultimately was what I wanted.⠀

The process was great, the end result was great, but in the end I decided to pull the pin and sold the car. Things in my life changed, the desire to get on the track and continue drifting fizzled out, and something else ended up in my possession which I never thought I’d own.

So what took its place? None other than Americas greatest, a good ol LS paired with a T56. A 1JZ was a close second but ultimately I wanted to experience raw NA power and constant torque only a V8 can provide.⠀

Many other items were overhauled at the same time. Like the WRX brake master cylinder paired with EVO 7 front calipers (which bolt on with minor work). Further rewiring of the body loom, relocation of the battery, adding a hydraulic handbrake, another set of wheels (Rays Gramlight 57c) among many other intricate details that is expected with an engine conversion.

In the end, I decided to cut my ties with the rotary engine, there were a mixture of reasons behind it but ultimately it came down to the disappointment it brought forth, it always had some niggiling issue stopping it from performing as it should, and I lost trust in “reputable” rotary work shops. Let alone the cost to rebuild a rotary at the time.⠀

So out it all came, everything within the engine bay was pulled and sold, it was time to start fresh.⠀

It’s 2019, I’d been enjoying driving the RX7 around and further making minor changes to get it exactly how I want it. But one day I noticed a considerable amount of coolant in the garage. Unfortunately for me the 13B cracked a water jacket. My guess was majority of the damage was done on the drift day at Sydney Motorsport Park - North circuit.⠀

Yet again I was at a cross roads, this time it was whether I embark on rebuilding and keeping the RX7 pure, or ripping out its soul and stuffing something else in its place.⠀

Here’s a snippet of the day with the 7 on song momentarily. Little did I know at the time, this would be the last drift event I’d drive in.

During this time, Eastern Creek/Sydney Motorsport Park were playing hard ball with drifting on their North Circuit track, and it would be fortunate to see one or two drift events a year. So when they pop up you best try to attend.⠀

The problem with this particular event was that it was in peak summertime, and while the RX7s temperatures were stable in the previous events, I wanted to add some extra precautions.⠀

Ultimately I added an additional inline oil cooler; a power steering cooler, and a DMax vented bonnet.⠀

Little did I know, it ended up being peak of 45 degrees on the day.⠀

It was suicidal and for many, their cars couldn’t handle the heat. As the day went on the track thinned out with many calling it quits early on.⠀

The RX7 managed to run most of the day, though it wasn’t happy about it. I didn’t get too many clean laps and In the end my day was halted due to a burnt out alternator. ⠀

Back on the tow truck it went!

Things were going well, the RX7 tackled another couple of events and preformed well for the most part with minor changes and adjustments made along the way.

Being the wheel w***e that I am, a set of wheels appeared that caught my eye. A set of legendary Desmond Regamasters in 17x9 +18.

I wasn’t too fond of the ride height with the 18 inch RPF1s and wanted to go a little lower, these 17 inch regas were the cake, and the cherry on top was their satin white finish.

This combo was definitely my favourite, the white on white popped and I was able to achieve a look I was happy with without scrubbing.

11 months had passed from the first shakedown and we’re now at the back end of 2018. Nearly 2 years of ownership and the enormous snowball quashed. We’re back at SMSP. This time to put the RX7 through its paces sideways.

I cannot lie, I was a little nervous that evening. The rotary ownership I embarked on with this car was anything but smooth sailing. I expected it to be rocky to a degree so my spirits were still high.

It had also been a few years since I had drifted so naturally that added fuel to the fire.

But miracles happen, the RX7 preformed flawlessly and sounded fantastic at full tilt. It performed right up until the balljoint of my PBM LCA decided to divorce from the knuckle.

Fortunately I managed to stop the car before running off track. Damage was minimal but it was enough to end my night as I didn’t have any spares.

So with that rectified I set out to attend a few more events, the car was buzzing and so was I. All of the blood sweet tears (and money) had paid off!

Being time poor, and not feeling the need to sell my kidneys to pay a certain shops hourly rate, I sent it to another workshop I was much more familiar with.⠀

They fitted up my ORC clutch, along with some other goodies like my powered by max kit(PBM) solid subframe/diff bushes, new brake pads/rotors, and a Mazdaspeed 2 way LSD.⠀

But the modifications didn’t stop! I bought the whole PBM catalog for the FC. I was adamant on having the RX7 set up to go drifting and to drift well. I fitted the front end up the same time I dialled in my new wheels.⠀

Now we all know TE37s are goated. But I wanted more tyre in the back of the Mazda now that it was pushing over 300kw, and with the PBM front end extending out 30mm the fronts would be too aggressive. A deal on a set of Enkei RPF1s popped up in some favourable sizing which ultimately saw the TE37s on their way to a new home. ⠀

Another item I added somewhere in the mix was an Astra TS electric power steering pump, as yep you guessed it the factory one was leaking. This proved to be a very worthwhile upgrade and would recommend to anyone thinking about running such a setup.⠀

I also obtained some Bride Stradia seats which found their way into the cockpit of the FC, they were a much needed upgrade over the 30 year old originals. Although my seating position was still not ideal (tall guy, small car problems).⠀

This was it, the enormous snowball that had formed and undoubtedly grew out of control was suddenly thawing out. Getting the RX7 on track again was just over the horizon.⠀

We’re in 2018 now and with a shake down of the car complete, it was time to get to work on the gremlins that appeared.⠀

First up was a rewire of the wiring loom. With vast amount of it sitting on the frame rail of the hot side, it was looking worse for wear. Ultimately this led to a wire tuck and had the engine bay looking rather neat. Nothing like 2 birds with 1 stone.⠀

I eventually put registration on the car and on its first drive the engine cut out. The Microtech was toast.⠀

So back under the bonnet I went, and fitted a new engine loom to suit the ECU to be installed.⠀

Off if went off to a “reputable” rotary specialist to get a new tune on E85 with a Haltech platinum sport 1000. Effectively ditching the old Mircotech ECU Australian rotary enthusiasts adored. ⠀

A simple task which ended in being quite complex and exorbitantly expensive. For the price charged and the “things” that went wrong, their workmanship and was certainly questionable.⠀

But alas the car was tuned, the T70 came onto boost much earlier and the cabin perfumed with the sweet smell of E85 with the top down at idle, it couldn’t get much better than that!⠀

Until the clutch started slipping, and didn’t stop slipping. ⠀

Many months pass and as you can imagine, many things were changed on the car. Once the car returned from my fabricator friend, I continued to cleaning up certain aspects I wasn’t too happy with, and planning what I wanted to do with it next.⠀

Naturally it needed to have good fitment, and fortunately for me a set of TE37s popped up that would fit perfectly on the FC. A good friend of mine snapped up for me whilst I was interstate. You best believe as soon as I got home I bolted them up, along with the Tein mono flex coilovers I had rebuilt.⠀

I remember attending Rotary Revival 2017 at Eastern Creek/SMSP (think power cruise exclusive to rotary powered vehicles). It was the first time I really got to stretch the legs of the bridgeported 13B and dust off any lingering cobwebs.⠀

I hired a trailer to tow the car to the track and I ended up getting shafted with the trailer size … it was too small and the car didn’t fit. ⠀

I was in too deep already, and far too curious to know how the car behaved and what needed attention. I couldn’t wait for another event to line up when I was back for my rest days. So I had a tow truck driver take it to the track. Fortunately I lived quite close to Eastern Creek that it didn’t cost me an arm and a leg to get it there.⠀

With all the event formality’s out of the way it was time to see what it could do. Soon enough some gremlins started to appear. It was inconsistent in power delivery, intermittent misfires and became increasingly frustrating to drive. The T70 turbo was laggy and when it managed to get onto full boost, the RX7 wasn’t very good at slowing down … no good.⠀

Once I got it home I had a look over and found the engine wiring harness was looking rather crispy. Yet again a snowball formed and continued to grow in size.⠀

At this point in my life (2017) I dropped off social media, Run It Hard! went on an indefinite hiatus and I moved into FIFO work. While I was travelling all over the east coast, I had an idea pop into my head.⠀

I wanted something a little less mundane to cruise around in when I was at home, and tip my toe back into drifting if the opportunity presented itself.⠀

So the search began! With my positive experience with an infamous rotary I started looking around for something a little more brazen.⠀

It was when I came across a neat series 5 RX7 convertible with some goodies on it like a Bridge-ported engine and massive turbo, that I found the successor to the RX-8.⠀

It was located in the ACT, so one weekend when I was home I hitched a trailer and brought it back to Western Sydney.⠀

It had a few things that needed addressing, like the cooling system. So I decided to take it to a friends place to get various items fabricated whilst I was working interstate. Of course this snowballed and inevitably had quite a few items fabricated.⠀
