What is SEO, explained without a single bit of bulls .

Imagine Google is a bloke who gets asked for a builder recommendation forty times a day. He does not know you. He is not going to give your name out unless he is fairly confident you will not embarrass him.

SEO is just everything that makes him confident.

Does your site clearly say what you do and where you do it. Is it fast enough that people do not bail. Have other websites mentioned you. Do you have recent reviews. Is your Google listing filled in properly. Have you got a page that actually covers the thing someone searched for, rather than one page that vaguely covers everything.

That is it. That is the whole thing. There is no trick and there is no switch.

The honest bit most people will not tell you: it takes three to six months before you see meaningful movement. Anyone promising you page one in thirty days is either lying or about to do something that gets your site penalised.

Save this one for when someone tries to sell you SEO over the phone.

Strange thing for a bloke who builds websites to say, but most of you need to prioritise this.

You need to fill out the free Google thing properly.

When someone searches “electrician near me” or “builder Wollongong”, Google shows a map with three businesses on it before it shows a single website. That map is Google Business Profile. It is free. Most local businesses have claimed it and then left half of it blank.

No service list. Four photos from 2019. No suburbs. No hours over the holidays. No answers in the questions section. No reviews asked for in eight months.

Fixing all of that is an hour of your time and zero dollars, and for a lot of trades it will do more this month than a two thousand dollar website would.

Do that first. Then, if you still want the site done properly, I am right here.

A couple posts in, probably time I told a little more about myself 😁

I’m Bax. I build websites and run digital marketing for businesses around the Illawarra and Australia wide. Builders, trades, physios, clinics, salons, cafes. Mostly people who are flat out focusing on their actual work and have not had a spare hour to think about their website and marketing since it all started.

There is no agency behind me. It is me and 3 others. That means you get our direct mobile number instead of an account manager, and it means I take on a handful of builds at a time rather than a dozen.

We cover and specialise in the actual mechanics of getting found online, explained properly, from someone who does it for a living. We are just normal blokes looking to help your business be seen.

Open your website on your phone. Tap the number in the header.

If it does not start a call, it is an image. Someone built the header as a picture, the number went in with it, and now every person who tries to ring you has to memorise it, back out, and dial manually.

Most of them do not. They just ring the next bloke.

It is a fifteen minute fix and it is probably the highest value fifteen minutes you will spend on your site this year.

New one of these every Wednesday. Same time, different problem.

Three words your web guy uses that nobody ever explains properly.

Your domain is your street address. It is what people type in. You rent it yearly, usually 20 to 30 bucks for a .com.au, and you should own it in your own name. Not your nephew’s. Not your last web guy’s.

Your hosting is the block of land the house sits on. It is where the actual files live. If hosting stops getting paid, the site disappears, even though you still own the address.

The website is the house. That is the bit you can see.

Three separate things, three separate bills, and the reason people get held to ransom is that they only ever paid for the house and someone else quietly owns the land and the address.

Check yours today. If you cannot log in to the place your domain is registered, that is a problem worth fixing before it becomes an emergency.
