Call for governments to cut regulatory costs

Nearly 30 groups representing small, medium and large businesses, and universities, that employ millions of Australians, are calling on all governments to cut regulatory costs by 25 per cent to help consumers and businesses amid surging costs.

Ampol welcomes the Queensland Government’s proposed investment towards the establishment of a co-processing renewable diesel capability at its refinery in Lytton.

A further 200 million litres of additional diesel for the country has been secured under the Australian government’s new Strategic Reserve powers. Work has also commenced with leading fertiliser companies to secure more supply at this critical time in the growing season. The government has partnered with bp Australia and continued its partnership with Viva Energy, taking the total additional diesel secured to approximately 300 million litres, or over 1.8 million additional barrels, to keep Australia moving.

The United Convenience Buyers Australia Stores (UCB) ‘Elevate’ themed National Member Conference was held last month at Royal Pines Resort Gold Coast with a packed agenda including its annual trade show, networking activities, and industry keynote speakers at the business sessions.

Accredited Distributors celebrates its 50-year milestone in business. From its humble beginnings as a family grocery store in Dandenong, Accredited Distributors has evolved to include four branches across Victoria.

Australasian Convenience and Petroleum Marketers Association says Australia stops when there is no fuel in your bowsers. “What the events of the past months have shown is that fuel security can no longer be treated as an abstract discussion point, rather that it is central to everything we do,” says CEO Rowan Lee.

The P&C industry is already seeing real-world examples of how ESG is influencing business decisions and financial outcomes following the introduction of mandatory reporting last year. The ESG feature underscores ESG in practice, commercial advantage, and planning and action for businesses.

CHALLENGING TIMES FOR INDUSTRY

The ACCC granted an urgent interim authorisation on 20 March to the Australian Institute of Petroleum (AIP), its members, and other relevant industry participants to coordinate in managing impacts to Australia’s fuel supply chain stemming from the conflict in the Middle East.

Independent Australian fuel and convenience chain APCO brought together retailers, suppliers and head office team members in February for its Trade Show and 2025 Gala Excellence Awards.

In what is described as turbulent times for petrol and convenience, in the background, ACAPMA has had a seat at the table at state government fuel supply roundtables in NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, and Western Australia. At the national level, ACAPMA participated in meetings of the National Emergency Management Agency and an urgent meeting of the ACCC’s Fuel Consultative Committee.

The retail fuel market remains competitive:
Retailers must continually innovate, invest, and adapt

The Australian Retail Council (ARC) has lodged its first major submission. This outlines seven targeted reforms to strengthen retail productivity, support investment and ease cost-of-living pressures for Australian households and businesses as part of the pre-Budget process. With interest rate uncertainty underscoring the importance and urgency of economic reform, the ARC warns that fragmented regulation, rising compliance costs and unchecked illicit activity are undermining productivity and confidence.

This year’s ACAPMA Conference (7-9 September) promises to deliver another high-impact program that brings together Australia’s fuel and convenience leaders, technical experts, suppliers, and stakeholders for three days of strategic discussion, professional development, and invaluable networking.

Workplace law continues to evolve in 2026. While there are no single “shock” legislative reforms dominating headlines, a series of court decisions, consultations and reviews are reshaping the operating environment for small employers. For convenience retailers operating with small teams, extended trading hours and tight margins, even incremental regulatory shifts can have real operational consequences. COSBOA underscores the key developments small businesses should be aware of.

The retail fuel market remains extremely competitive but the difficulty for companies is in balancing the rising costs of doing business against consumers looking for value in a cost-of-living squeeze. Read more in the petroleum suppliers feature.

In this issue, we focus on petroleum suppliers, and waste management. We also look at coffee culture, grocery, snacks, confectionery, beverages, ice cream, the on-the-go market, health and wellbeing, equipment and services, innovation through technology, and environmental matters.

State of the industry 2025

Each year, the Australian Fuel & Convenience Awards seek to shine a spotlight on the outstanding contributions made by businesses and individuals across the industry. The AFC Awards for 2025 celebrate innovation and community impact within the industry. Convenience World profiles this year’s award winners that embody resilience, innovation, and community spirit.

2025 was a year of transition for ACAPMA with Mark McKenzie moving onto a new and exciting challenge after 10 years at the helm. It has also been another busy year in the advocacy space with governments and regulators doing both expected and unexpected things, says ACAPMA CEO Rowan Lee.

Insights from Circana’s State of the Industry analysis reveal a marketplace defined by patchy performance, intense competitive pressure, and rapid transformation driven by technology, consumer behaviour, and shifting definitions of value.

Industry leaders reflect on the past year’s highs and lows, changes and challenges, trends and results for their companies and brands in the petrol and convenience channel.

We highlight what’s trending in foodservice, food and hospitality, and the latest products to hit the market in grocery, on the go, confectionery, snacks, ice cream, beverage, equipment, and technology and services. We also address changing shopper and market trends, and opportunities for driving growth.

Optimism rises this holiday trading period

Family-owned and operated Australian buying group New Sunrise’s landmark 17th annual Iceworks event at the Marriott Palm Jumeirah in Dubai last month brought together more than 400 of Australia’s leading independent convenience retailers and suppliers for a dynamic week of networking, strategic workshops, and immersive experiences.

Dover Fueling Solutions recently published a white paper, ‘Fuel retail savings and efficiency: Unlocking measurable savings across an entire fuel site’. The white paper brings together findings from across the sector, including evidence that early action on fuel loss, equipment downtime, and disjointed customer journeys can significantly impact the bottom line.

Governments that want to be seen to do something are usually trying to solve a political problem, or at least a perception of a problem. The alternative is a government that has a clear policy objective and methodically works through how to achieve the best outcome, says Australasian Convenience and Petroleum Marketers Association (ACAPMA) CEO Rowan Lee.

With risk exposures ranging from catastrophic events to economic uncertainty, Australian businesses face the challenge of how to navigate increasingly complex issues. Understanding the trends and related risk insights can help fuel and convenience store operators make more informed decisions before renewing their business insurance, says Gallagher.

In this issue, we focus on wholesale & distribution. We also look at coffee culture, grocery, snacks, confectionery, beverages, ice cream, the on-the-go market, health and wellbeing, equipment and services, innovation through technology, and environmental matters.

Petrol still the backbone of fuel retailing

Despite the rising popularity of diesel cars and hybrids, petrol-powered vehicles remain dominant in fuel retail sales, especially as interest in fully electric cars slows, according to IBISWorld’s ‘Fuel Retailing in Australia’ report published in April.

Meanwhile, shifting health preferences are reshaping convenience store beverage offerings. Low-sugar, functional beverages such as kombucha, fortified waters and cold-pressed juices are growing in popularity, making them a significant revenue driver for on-the-go consumers, according to the IBISWorld ‘Convenience Stores in Australia’ report published in May.

Outgoing ACAPMA CEO Mark McKenzie has penned his final column for Convenience World magazine, highlighting his journey and what’s next as he hands over the reins to incoming CEO Rowan Lee.

The national wage case increased the minimum wage by 3.5 per cent from 1 July. ACAPMA has released wage rate guides and the Fuel Retail Award information poster.

In this issue, we focus on foodservice and equipment. We also look at coffee culture, grocery, snacks, confectionery, beverages, ice cream, the on-the-go market, health and wellbeing, equipment and services, innovation through technology, and environmental matters.
