PORTUGUESE & ENGLISH MADE EASY | TRAVEL PORTUGUESE

What a wonderful first week of our new Travel Portuguese initiative!

This series was created in collaboration between The Bajan Reporter and Prof Sir Adrian Daisley with one simple idea: learning a language should be practical, enjoyable and connected to the real world.

Throughout the week, we explored everyday expressions that travelers can actually use when moving between English- and Portuguese-speaking environments.

✈️ What did we cover?

We began with the basics of introducing yourself:

🇬🇧 Hello, my name is…
🇵🇹 Olá, o meu nome é…

We then learned how to greet someone and say:

🇬🇧 Nice to meet you.
🇵🇹 Muito prazer.

From there, we moved into the hotel experience, learning useful expressions such as:

🇵🇹 Bem-vindo ao hotel!
🇬🇧 Welcome to the hotel!

We also looked at pronunciation, travel tips and a little cultural knowledge behind the language—including the distinction between “Bem-vindo” and “Bem-vinda.”

More Than Learning Words

Portuguese is spoken across different parts of the world, and our initiative recognizes that diversity.

Our focus connects Barbados, Portugal and Brazil, while encouraging greater confidence in communicating across cultures.

The objective is not to turn everyone into a language scholar overnight. It is much simpler:

Learn one useful phrase. Understand how to say it. Understand when to use it. Then use it.

That is how language becomes a practical skill.

And We Are Just Getting Started

Each lesson will build on the previous one, gradually taking us through situations travelers may encounter, from introductions and hotels to airports, restaurants, transportation and everyday conversations.

So if you have been following the series, thank you for joining us.

If you are discovering it for the first time, welcome!

Indonesian government is currently collecting elementary and high school textbooks from Malaysia and also other neighboring countries in Southeast Asia. These books will serve as benchmarks for improving school textbooks in the country.

Indonesia’s Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi stated that President Prabowo Subianto wants to improve school textbooks. This includes not only the material, but also the physical quality and appearance, ensuring comfortable reading.

“Essentially, we want to improve the quality of textbooks for all our students, from elementary, middle, and high school,” he said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Friday (August 7, 2026).

The textbooks used for comparison have come from Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Timor Leste, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya specifically ordered them from abroad.

According to him, the idea for this reform stemmed from President Prabowo’s direct visits to schools. During the visit, Prabowo inspected the physical quality of each textbook held by the students. Prabowo then requested an evaluation by comparing the quality of national printing with textbooks from neighboring countries.

“When checking the textbooks, he looked at them one by one and found that some of the materials were easily damaged, and some were already damaged,” said Teddy.
