First in Space:

The first man flew into space in 1961 and the first woman in 1963. Both were from the former Soviet Union. The United States space program concentrated on landing on the Moon. - First in Space

Yuri Gagarin, a pilot in the Soviet Union's Air Force, orbited Earth in a Vostok spacecraft in April 1961. The flight took less than two hours. To return to Earth, Gagarin ejected from the spacecraft at 7000 metres and parachuted to the ground. The spacecraft used another parachute to land. In 1963, Valentina Tereshkova orbited Earth 48 times in Vostok 6 and spent almost three days in space. - First in Space

In February 1962, John Glenn, in Friendship 7, became the first US astronaut to orbit Earth. The US Apollo program was devoted to the goal of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth. In December 1968 Apollo 8 orbited the Moon with three crew members on board. The crew of Apollo 9 took part in the first flight of the lunar module. In May 1969, Apollo 10 carried out the final practice for a moon landing. It travelled to within 15 km of the Moon's surface and made the first live, colour TV broadcast from space. - First in Space

Amazing Facts about Space :

Before people ventured into space, scientists sent animals, so they could observe how the animals coped with being in space. The dog, Laika, was the first mammal from Earth to orbit the planet. Laika died from stress and overheating during her 1957 space mission in the Russian spacecraft Sputnik 2.

As telescopes have become more powerful, they have allowed us to observe planets, galaxies and nebulae in greater detail. In 1990 the Hubble telescope was sent into orbit

Galileo discovered four moons orbiting Jupiter in January 1610.

The Indian Astronomical Observatory which sits 4517 metres above sea level, in Hanle, India, is the world's highest observatory telescope.

Amateur astronomers use refracting telescopes The earliest telescopes were all refracting telescopes including the famous and very simple telescope used by Galileo Galilei in the early 1600s.

The Keck telescopes, the world's largest optical telescopes, are located on the dormant Mauna Kea volcano on the island of Hawaii.

Hubble is the size of a large school bus. It fits inside the cargo bay of a space shuttle.

The Hubble Space Telescope spotted young brown dwarfs for the first time in the Orion Nebula. Brown dwarfs are so-called failed stars because they are too small to be ordinary stars — they cannot sustain nuclear fusion in their cores the way our Sun does.

Hubble is serviced and newer technology is installed by astronauts on space walks. This means that Hubble can benefit from the same advances as ground-based telescopes.

The Hubble Space Telescope completes one full orbit of Earth every 97 minutes.

A three-stage rocket, Saturn V, was used to take astronauts to the Moon in the Apollo spacecraft. Stage 1 burnt its fuel over 2 minutes and 30 seconds - then separated from the rest of the rocket ond fell back to Earth. Stage 2 then fired and lifted the astronauts into space. It too fell away. Finally, Stage 3 fired for 2 minutes and 30 seconds and sent Apollo into orbit around Earth. Stage 3 fired again for over five minutes to send Apollo towards the Moon. It then fell away from the spacecraft. All spacecraft and satellites are taken into space by rockets.

The largest and most powerful rocket ever built was the Saturn V rocket.

The Mariner probes were designed to investigate Mars, Venus and Mercury. In 1962, Mariner 2 became the first spacecraft to fly by another planet when it passed Venus.

The Viking landers conducted experiments on Martian soil to see if any form of life existed. Decades later, scientists are still arguing over the results.

The Halley Multicolor Camera on the Giotto probe was destroyed when it veered too close to the tail of Halley's Comet. Before it was shattered, it took some spectacular pictures of the comet's nucleus.

In 1959, the Soviet Luna 2 mission successfully crashed into the Moon. It made history by being the first man-made object to reach another world.

Communications industries, such as Internet, TV and telephones, use satellites to transmit information quickly.

Satellites also have an Attitude Control System which keeps the satellite pointing in the right direction.

The Soviet Union was the first country to launch a satellite. The Soviets launched Sputnik 1 on 4 October 1957. This was to be the beginning of the space race between the Soviet Union and the USA.

If a satellite doesn't reach a suitable altitude, it can be affected by the drag of Earth's atmosphere and fall back into the atmosphere where it burns up.

Rockets launch satellites into space. On reaching orbit the satellites are released. Satellites travel at a speed of about 28800 kilometres per hour which allows them to fly in an arc around Earth.

The Nimbus 7 weather satellite confirmed that an ozone hole exists over Antarctica.

In the future, navigation satellites may assist in air traffic control.

There ore over 8000 artificial objects orbiting Earth - 2500 of these are satellites.

Valentino Tereshkova, the first woman to venture into space, spent 2 days, 22 hours and 50 minutes in space. While orbiting Earth in Vostok 6, she took photographs of Earth's atmosphere. These photographs were later used by scientists to identify the different layers within the atmosphere.

381.7 kg of Moon rock was brought bock to Earth by the Apollo program. Most of the material is stored at the Lunar Receiving Laboratory in Houston, Texas, USA.

There were 11 manned flights in the Apollo program — Apollo 7 to Apollo 17. Apollo 4 to Apollo 6 were unmanned test flights (officially there was no Apollo 2 or Apollo 3).

In January 1967, the crew of Apollo I died during a simulated countdown on the launch pad. A fire killed three astronauts. As a result all further Apollo flights were unmanned until Apollo 7 in 1968.

Light Years Away:

Distances in space are measured in light years. This is the distance that light travels in one year.

How do light years measure distance?

A light year is a measure of distance. A ray of light travels 9.5 trillion kilometres in one year or 9.5 million million kilometers or 9500000000000 km. So a light year is 9500000000000 km.

Scientists use light years to measure distances in the universe because the universe is so immense. They use light years to measure distances between galaxies and between stars.

Light years also tell how long the light has taken to reach Earth. Alpha Centauri is one of the closest stars to Earth. It is 4.3 light years from Earth. This means that the light from this star has taken 4.3 years to reach Earth. We see the star as it was 4.3 years ago.

Our Sun is 150 million kilometers from Earth. Light from the Sun takes eight minutes to reach us. This means that the Sun is eight light minutes away from Earth. It also means that the light we see from the Sun is eight minutes old. We see the Sun as it was eight minutes ago.

Galaxies can extend from a few thousand to a million light years in diameter. Our Milky Way galaxy is 150000 light years across.

In September 2004 the most distant space probe, Voyager 1, was 13 light hours (14.3 billion km) away from Earth. It took Voyager 27 years to cover that distance.

Light travels at a speed of about 300 000 kilometres per second.

Nothing can move faster than light — no object, no matter, no information can directly overtake or catch up with light.

A Farmer and His Wife:

A farmer said to his wife, “you are lazy. You work slowly and lethargically. You waste your time."

The wife was angry at the words of her husband.

She said to her husband, “You are wrong. Stay at home tomorrow. I will go to field. I will do your work there. Will you do my works at home here?"

The farmer said happily, “Very well. I will do your works back at home."

The wife said, “Milk the cow. Feed the pigs. Waste the utensils. Take care of our hen. Spin the yarn."

The woman went to the field. The farmer stayed back at home. He took a vessel and went to the cow to milk it. He tried to milk the cow. He received a good kick. He then went to the pig-sty. He hit his head against the beam. He went to feed the hen. He forgot to spin.

The wife returned from the field when it turned evening. The farmer hung down his head in shame. Thereafter, he did not find fault with his wife. They lived happily together for a long time.

Struggles of our Life

Once upon a time a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and that she didn't know how she was going to make it. She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed. Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire.

Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot and ground coffee beans in the third pot. He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter. The daughter, moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing. After twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. He then ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup.

Turning to her, he asked. "Daughter, what do you see?" "Potatoes, eggs and coffee," she hastily replied.

"Look closer", he said, "and touch the potatoes." She did and noted that they were soft.

He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg.

Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma brought a smile to her face.

"Father, what does this mean?" she asked.

He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each faced the same adversity-the boiling water. However, each one reacted differently. The potato went in strong, hard and unrelenting, but in boiling water, it became soft and weak. The egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior until it was put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard. However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new.

"Which one are you?" he asked his daughter. "When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean?"

Moral: In life, things happen around us, things happen to us, but the only thing that truly matters is how you choose to react to it and what you make out of it. Life is all about leaning, adopting and converting all the struggles that we experience into something positive.

The Milkmaid and her Pail:

Patty the Milkmaid was going to the market carrying milk in a pail on her head.

As she went along, she began calculating what she would do with the money she would get for the milk. "I'll buy some fowls from Farmer Brown," said she, "and they will lay eggs each morning, which I will sell to the parson's wife. With the money that I get from the sale of these eggs, I'll buy myself a new dimity frock and a chip hat, and when I go to the market, won't all the young men come up and speak to me! Polly Shaw will be so jealous, but I don't care. I shall just look at her and toss my head like this." Short Stories

As she spoke that, she tossed her head back and the pail fell off it, and all the milk was spilt!

The Lion and The Hare

Once in a forest there lived a lion who was very proud of his strength. He would kill any animal which came in his way just for fun. All the animals in the forest were worried about their survival.

"If the lion keeps this up, none of us will be left in the forest," said the bear.

"He kills much more than he really needs to," squeaked the little hare.

"We have to come up with something to stop this massacre," said the monkey. So they all joined together and went to meet the lion.

"O king of the forest, we have come to make a small request," they all said to the lion.

"Now what would that be?" asked the amused lion.

"You are the king of the forest, but soon there will be no animals to rule over. So we beg you to stop this unreasonable killing and we promise that one of us will come to you everyday for your food," pleaded all the animals with the lion.

So from that day, the animals drew lots to decide on who was to go to the lion as his prey.

One day, the lots fell on the hare to visit the lion. All the animals consoled him and sent him on his way to meet his doom. But the hare was a clever animal. He did not want to die at the hands of the cruel lion. He saw an old well on the way. It was very deep and was a danger for all the animals. He thought of a plan.

The little hare went to sleep near the well all day. In the evening, he made his way to the lion's den. The lion was terribly hungry by then and when he saw a tiny hare coming towards him, he became furious.

"You little thing, how dare you come so late? How dare they send such a small animal? I will kill them all," the angry lion roared.

"It is not my fault, O mighty lion. There were three other hares with me. But on the way here, another lion attacked us. I just managed to escape. The other three hares were eaten by that lion,"said the hare.

"What? Another lion in my jungle? Take me to him immediately," said the lion in a fit of rage.

The hare took the lion to the well and pointed it out to him from a distance. The other lion jumped out at us from inside the well when we tried to drink some water from the well. The lion rushed angrily to the well and peeped in.

There inside the well he could see another lion glaring at him. What the foolish lion did not realise in his anger was that he was looking at his reflection. He roared angrily at the other lion. He heard an answering roar.

It was only the echo of his own roar. But the lion thought that the other lion was challenging him. He jumped in and landed inside with a loud splash. And that was the end of the wicked lion.

The Accidental Landing:

Among the eight planets, Earth is the only planet that has life. But humans destroyed the earth's living features like air, water, soil, etc. So Indians were planning to send satellites in search of other planets like Earth. The day, came where no one was willing to go for the mission. Me (Panbalan) and my friend Navin Kumar decided to take the risk for the sake of billion and billion species in the world.

After traveling around 300 days, suddenly due to a technical fault our space ship got crashed and landed on a surface. We lost all signals to the Earth, with high fear and curiosity we opened the door. After a long discussion, we decided to go out and find a way, slowly we stepped down without preparatory suits. Fortunately, we could see all the places over there so it may be day. Sun was brightly shining, and suddenly there was a drizzling and started pouring, we were astonished by the sudden rain for a few minutes and we thought it to be a welcome rain specially for us.

Then we carefully moved our steps, it was just like walking then me and my friend checked all the parameter like oxygen, temperature, pressure, gravity and water quality all were normal condition as it was in the earth. So with all courage, we removed our mask. To our surprise we were normal, nothing happened to us, both of us hugged our self with joy having a little hope at least we have our breath freely.

Now awaited for other dangers around, but there were mountains, rivers, lakes, plains, waterfalls, glaciers, plateau and desert with all colorful insects, beautiful birds, fragrant flowers, trees full of fruits like heaven. The only missing one was Humans except us. We enjoyed being there, we utilized all the resource and whiled away the days happily. After a year trying our technical fault has been rectified and we decided to return with a strong decision that not reveal the secret of this place. Hope so that you all agree with the decision.

The Ant and the Grasshopper:

One summer's day, in a field, a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart's content. An Ant passed by, bearing along with great effort an ear of corn he was taking to his nest.

"Why don't you come and chat with me," asked the Grasshopper, "instead of toiling your life away?"

"I am helping to store up food for the winter," said the Ant, "and I recommend you to do the same."

"Why bother about winter?" said the Grasshopper. "We have got plenty of food at present."

Short StoriesBut the Ant went on its way and continued its toil.

When winter came, the Grasshopper found itself dying of hunger, while it saw the ants distributing, every day, corn and grain from the stores they had collected in summer.

Then the Grasshopper knew...

The Greedy Mouse:

A greedy mouse saw a basket full of corn. He wanted to eat it. So he made a small hole in the basket. He squeezed in through the hole. He ate a lot of corn. He felt full and was very happy.

Now he wanted to come out. He tried to come out through the small hole. He could not. His belly was full. He tried again. But it was of no use.

The mouse started crying. A rabbit was passing by. It heard the mouse's cry and asked, "Why are you crying, my friend?"

The mouse explained, "I made a small hole and came into the basket to eat the corn. Now I am not able to get out through that hole."

The rabbit said, "It is because you ate too much. Wait till your belly shrinks." The rabbit laughed and went away.

Short Stories - Greedy MouseThe mouse fell asleep in the basket. The next morning his belly had shrunk. But he wanted to eat some more corn. He forgot all about getting out of the basket. So he ate the corn and his belly was really big again.

After eating, the mouse remembered that he had to escape. But obviously, he could not. So he thought, "Oh! Now I will go out tomorrow."

The cat was the next passerby. He smelt the mouse in the basket. He lifted its lid and ate the mouse.

The Devoted Mother:

A mother duck and her little ducklings were on their way to a lake one day. The ducklings were very happy following their mother and quack-quacking along the way.

All of a sudden, the mother duck saw a fox at a distance. She was frightened, and shouted, "Children, hurry to the lake. There's a fox!"

The ducklings hurried towards the lake. The mother duck wondered what to do. Then she began to walk back and forth dragging one wing on the ground.

Short Stories - Devoted Mother 2When the fox saw her, he became happy. He said to himself, "It seems she's hurt and can't fly! I can easily catch and eat her!" He ran towards her.

The mother duck ran, leading the fox away from the lake. The fox followed her. Now he wouldn't be able to harm her ducklings. The mother duck looked towards her ducklings and saw that they had reached the lake. She was relieved, so she stopped and took a deep breath.

The fox thought that she was tired and he came closer, but the mother duck quickly spread her wings and rose up in the air. She landed in the middle of the lake and her ducklings swam to her.

The fox stared in disbelief at the mother duck and her ducklings. The mother duck had tricked him cleverly. Now he could not reach them because they were in the middle of the lake.
