A court has heard that a couple accused in connection with the d*ath of two-year-old Isabelle Welsh are each blaming the other as the high-profile trial continues at Teesside Crown Court.

Alexandra Walker, 25, and her partner, Harrison Simpson, 22, both deny charges including m*rder, causing or allowing the d*ath of a child, s*xual assult, and child cr*elty. Prosecutors allege the toddler suffered multiple injuries over several weeks before collapsing at her home in Thornaby in September 2025. Isabelle later d*ed in hospital.

During closing arguments, lawyers for both defendants argued that their own client was not responsible for the child's injuries. Harrison Simpson's defence said there was no evidence he had harmed Isabelle and argued it was wrong to assume he was responsible simply because he was the male partner. Alexandra Walker's defence maintained she never harmed her daughter, was unaware of any alleged ab*se, and claimed the evidence suggested Isabelle was only harmed when Simpson was alone with the child.

The prosecution has alleged that both defendants were responsible for a prolonged pattern of violence and a*bse. The court previously heard that medical examinations found Isabelle had suffered a serious head injury along with multiple other injuries before her d*ath.

The judge reminded jurors that it is not disputed Isabelle d*ed as a result of an unlawful ass*ult. However, both defendants deny responsibility, and the case remains before the court. No verdict has been reached, and the trial is continuing.

Kiran Kaur, the mother of Henry Nowakโ€™s convicted k*ller, Vicrum Digwa, has reportedly been transferred to a high-security unit at HMP Bronzefield following her sentencing for assisting an offender. According to reports, prison officials made the move due to concerns for her safety while in custody.

The prison unit, often referred to in media reports as an enhanced wing, is said to house several high-profile female inmates. Reports indicate that prisoners on the unit receive additional privileges compared with other wings, with authorities aiming to maintain a safer environment and reduce incidents of violence among inmates.

Last month, Kaur was sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of assisting an offender by hiding the knife used in the fatal st*bbing of 18-year-old Henry Nowak. During sentencing, Judge William Mousley KC said her actions helped conceal evidence and supported her son's claim that he had done nothing wrong instead of encouraging him to cooperate with authorities.

Vicrum Digwa was previously sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years after being convicted in connection with Henry Nowakโ€™s d*ath. The case attracted significant public attention, and the prison transfer of Kaur has since generated further discussion due to the profile of other inmates reportedly housed on the same wing.

"I am scared to be alive, not dead."

These powerful words belong to a courageous survivor who found the strength to confront her abuser โ€” and has now seen him handed an 18-year prison sentence.

Gavin Cowell, 37, from Sunderland, subjected the woman to a prolonged and horrific pattern of abuse that included r**e, s*xual assault, and repeatedly strangling her to the point where she struggled to breathe. He also destroyed her personal belongings and physically attacked her on multiple occasions.

Following a police investigation, Cowell was charged with a series of serious offences. He denied two counts of r**e, five counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, two counts of s*xual assault, and single counts each of non-fatal suffocation, controlling or coercive behaviour, making threats to kill, and threatening with an offensive weapon. A jury found him guilty on all contested charges. He did, however, plead guilty to two counts of damaging property and one count of destroying property.

Last month at Teesside Crown Court, Cowell was sentenced to 18 years in prison. In addition to his custodial sentence, he was made subject to a lifetime restraining order โ€” a permanent legal barrier designed to protect his victim from any future contact.

A convicted killer serving a life sentence has been found dead inside his cell at a Hertfordshire prison.

Mehretab Zemicael, an Eritrean national who had entered the United Kingdom illegally, was discovered hanged at HMP The Mount. A formal report into the circumstances of his death has since been published by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO), the body responsible for independently investigating all deaths occurring in custody.

Zemicael was 52 years old at the time of his death. He had been convicted at the Old Bailey in 2014 for the murder of Gary Brisco, a 42-year-old father of six with family ties to Rochdale, who had grown up in Accrington, Lancashire.

The killing took place in June 2013, when Zemicael stabbed Mr Brisco multiple times โ€” including serious wounds to the neck โ€” inside a room at a Whitechapel, East London hostel where both men were residing. Mr Brisco was pronounced dead at the scene. Following the attack, police launched a widespread manhunt and arrested Zemicael two weeks later, having slept rough since committing the crime. He was subsequently handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 15 years.

A registered s*x offender has been returned to prison after investigators discovered he had been viewing and distributing illegal indecent images of children with other offenders.

Adam Howe, 38, of Love Lane, Heaton Norris, Stockport, admitted to three charges at Manchester Crown Court โ€” including distributing indecent images of children, breaching his Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and failing to meet his s*x offender registration requirements.

Following the sentencing hearing, detectives described Howe as a calculated and repeat predator who represented a significant ongoing danger to children.

A judge sentenced him to four years and six months in prison, with a further extended licence period of nine years and six months.
