A common definition of community emerged as a group of people with diverse characteristics who are linked by social ties,
share common perspectives, and engage in joint action in geographical locations or settings. The participants differed in the emphasis they placed on particular elements of the definition. A community can also be defined by describing the social and political networks that lin
k individuals, community organizations, and leaders. Understanding these networks is critical to planning efforts in engagement. A community is a network of social and economic relationships and the places where those relationships interact. This is a broad yet restrictive definition. It means that just living near each other,
as in a suburban neighborhood, doesn't mean you're in community.
