Before “Mustang” was chosen, Ford considered several names for the car—including Cougar, Torino, and even T-Bird II (as a nod to the Thunderbird). But the name “Mustang” was inspired by the P-51 Mustang fighter plane from World War II, not the horse—though the horse imagery fit so well, it became part of the brand identity.
