J-20 Fighter: China ‘Unveils’ New Air-To-Ground Munition That Can Be Fired From Stealth Jet’s Hidden Bomb Bay

The Chinese defense industry has revealed a ground attack munition, which can reportedly also be launched from the internal weapons hold of “stealth fighters like the J-20.”

The TL-20 family of precision ground-strike munitions was revealed at the UMEX 2024 defense exhibition in Abu Dhabi, which also appears to be capable of being launched from other aircraft against light and unhardened ground targets.

While the weapon must have certainly been designed to be compatible with the J-20, the suggestion that the jet, too, has been envisaged for a ground attack role would be the first.

Russia’s ‘Satellite Killer’ S-500 AD System, 200-Ton RS-28 Sarmat ICMB To Be Put On Combat Duty By 2024, Senior Official Says

A senior Russian official has disclosed that the delivery of Sarmat complexes, previously dubbed “invincible” by Russian President Vladimir Putin, is scheduled to be completed by 2024.

Deputy Defense Minister Alexei Krivoruchko made this announcement on January 26. The Minister mentioned that the main priority for military-technical support to the Russian Armed Forces this year is the completion of the deployment of the Sarmat strategic missile system within the Strategic Missile Forces.

Russia’s RS-28 Sarmat, also known as Satan 2, is part of a series of advanced missiles introduced by Putin in 2018, alongside the Kinzhal and Avangard hypersonic missiles.

Sarmat, weighing over 200 tons and possessing the ability to transport multiple warheads, is designed to circumvent anti-missile defense systems by executing a brief initial boost phase.

This approach aims to reduce the timeframe available for enemy surveillance systems to identify and monitor the missile.

Separately, it was disclosed on the same day that the silos for the active duty of Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM), alongside Yars ICBMs and Avangard, are now prepared.

US approves F-16 fighter jet sale to Turkey worth $23bn

The US government has approved the $23bn (£18bn) sale of 40 new F-16 fighter jets to Turkey - a move that had been long delayed - after Ankara ratified Sweden's accession to Nato.

The deal includes modernisation kits for 79 existing Turkish F-16s.

The US State Department told Congress it had also approved the sale of 40 F-35 fighters to Greece, costing $8.6bn.

Turkey ratified Sweden's Nato accession after more than a year of delay that caused tension in the alliance.

It first made the request for the jets in 2021, but its delay in ratifying Sweden's Nato bid proved to be a major stumbling block. Turkey was concerned over what it called Sweden's support for Kurdish separatists.

China Flexes Muscle With ‘Attack Eagle’ Deployment; Practices To Hunt Enemy Warships With Land-Attack YJ-62 Missile

In another demonstration of its anti-ship capabilities, the Northern Theatre Command (NTC) of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) conducted military drills using its land-attack YJ-62 anti-ship cruise missiles (ASCMs).

The exercise was held at Haiyang, a coastal city southeast of the Shandong Peninsula in China, by the 333rd Coastal Defence Brigade of the PLA’s Northern Theatre Command. China Central Television (CCTV), a state-owned broadcaster in China, subsequently released video footage from the drill.

It showed the brigade exercising with four 8×8 WS2400 transporter-erector-launchers (TELs)—each with three YJ-62 ASCMs—and an 8×8 battery command post vehicle, likely the system’s standard battery configuration.

The land-attack YJ-62 missiles, primarily observed carrying the PLA’s Eastern and Southern Theater Commands, are probably being used with an NTC unit for the first time. China’s northern border and the Yellow Sea (West Sea) are the focal points of the PLA’s NTC, which is focused on border security with Russia and the Korean Peninsula.
