Believe it or not, moose are the largest of the deer species. Moose are excellent swimmers, able to dive and hold their breath for almost a full minute while eating underwater vegetation. Moose eat underwater vegetation, especially in the summer, their favorite food is aquatic plants in ponds and reservoirs, as they are high in minerals such as sodium, calcium and phosphorus, which are essential for them. Moose can also collect this food by diving very deep underwater.
They are agile. Bull moose live with one overwhelming asset, and that is their antlers. The antlers of the Alaskan moose, can be almost as wide as the animal's height, and have been recorded as being up to 80 inches long.
The maximum weight of a bull moose (male moose) is usually much higher, with large males weighing from 1,000 to 1,600 pounds (about 450 to 725 kg), but records have shown males weighing 1,800 pounds (about 818 kg) or more, making them among the largest moose in Alaska.
