Title: 'The Midnight Library' – The Book That Forced Me to Pause and Reflect

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

I don’t usually read self-help books. But I heard that The Midnight Library helps heal a broken heart – so I gave it a try. And to be honest? After finishing it, I felt like someone had walked through the nooks and crannies of my mind with a flashlight.

What’s the story about?

Nora Seed. A young woman whose life has come to a standstill. No job, no love, her dreams dead. What she once had – dreams of becoming a swimmer, a musician, a philosopher – all crushed under the weight of reality. One night, she decides she doesn’t want to live anymore. But then, she finds herself in a mysterious 'Midnight Library'. Where every book represents an 'alternate life' – what her life could have been if she had made a different choice.

Why did I like it?

First, the language is very simple, yet profound. No philosophical complexities. Anyone of any age can read it.

Second, Nora feels familiar. To you. To me. That voice inside all of us – "If only I had done that!", "Why didn’t I take that opportunity!" – Nora wrestles with that throughout the story.

Third, the book taught me – there’s no such thing as a 'wrong decision'. Whichever path you take, there will be struggles too. Happiness is never guaranteed. But there is experience. There is the will to live.

One scene stuck with me:

When Nora becomes a rock star. Successful, famous, fulfilled. And yet, even there – emptiness. That’s when I understood: external success can never give you inner peace.

What gave me pause?

The book is a bit 'predictable'. You can pretty much figure out the ending from the middle. And some chapters felt a bit monotonous. But that’s not a flaw – the slow pace might be intentional.

Not for everyone – a caution:

The book mentions suicidal thoughts, depression, and antidepressants. If you’re going through a very difficult mental state, you might want to read something else first.

Final words:

This book won’t magically solve all your problems. It’s not a magic pill. Rather, it’s a mirror – a mirror that shows you that your present life is actually the best gift you already have.

After reading this book, I asked myself – "Do I waste so much time on my 'what ifs'?" The answer was very clear. Now I try to enjoy the small moments. A cup of tea. A walk. A deep breath.

Not for those seeking a 'perfect life'. But for those who want to love their imperfect life a little more – The Midnight Library is a wonderful companion.
