The Man Beneath the Sky
(আকাশের নিচে মানুষটি)
The life of a street begger(রাস্তার ভিক্ষারীর জীবন)
Every (প্রতিটি) day (দিন), under (নিচে) the (এই) scorching (প্রচণ্ড গরম) sun (সূর্য) and (এবং) every (প্রতিটি) night (রাত), under (নিচে) the (এই) cold (ঠান্ডা), uncaring (উদাসীন) stars (তারাগুলো), an (একজন) old (বৃদ্ধ) man (লোক) named (নাম)sabur(সবুর) lived (বাস করত) on (উপর) the (এই) streets (রাস্তাগুলো)।
His (তার) skin (চামড়া) was (ছিল) burned (পুড়ে গিয়েছিল) from (থেকে) the (এই) heat (গরমে), his (তার) feet (পা) cracked (ফেটে গিয়েছিল) from (থেকে) walking (হাঁটতে হাঁটতে) barefoot (খালি পায়ে) on (উপর) concrete (কংক্রিট), and (এবং) his (তার) eyes (চোখ), though (যদিও) tired (ক্লান্ত), still (তবুও) held (ধারণ করত) quiet (নিঃশব্দ) strength (শক্তি)।
He (সে) used to be (একসময় ছিল) a tailor (একজন দর্জি), once (একসময়)—long ago (অনেক আগে), when (যখন) his hands (তার হাত) were (ছিল) steadier (আরও স্থির), and (এবং) his back (তার পিঠ) didn't ache (ব্যথা করত না) with every breath (প্রতিটি নিঃশ্বাসে)।
But (কিন্তু) time (সময়) was not kind (সদয় ছিল না)। One by one (একটির পর একটি), life (জীবন) took away (কেড়ে নিল) everything (সবকিছু): his shop (তার দোকান), his small home (ছোট ঘর), and (এবং) his family (পরিবার)।
All he had left now (তার যা কিছু বাকি ছিল এখন) was (ছিল) a torn bag (একটি ছেঁড়া ব্যাগ), a broken umbrella (একটি ভাঙা ছাতা), and (এবং) an old lungi (একটি পুরনো লুঙ্গি) that fluttered (যা উড়ত) in the wind (বাতাসে)।
During the day (দিনের বেলা), he sat beside a traffic light (সে ট্রাফিক সিগনালের পাশে বসে থাকত), with (সহ) an open palm (একটি খোলা হাত) and (এবং) a silent prayer (নিঃশব্দ প্রার্থনা)।
Some people gave coins (কিছু মানুষ কয়েন দিত), some turned their heads (কিছু মুখ ফিরিয়ে নিত)।
When it rained (যখন বৃষ্টি হতো), he wrapped himself (সে নিজেকে জড়াতো) in a piece of plastic (প্লাস্টিকের একটি টুকরায়), crouched against a wall (একটি দেয়ালের পাশে কুঁকড়ে বসে থাকত), waiting (অপেক্ষা করত) for the storm to pass (ঝড় থেমে যাওয়ার জন্য)।
When the sun burned too fiercely (যখন সূর্য খুব বেশি জ্বলত), he would hide beneath the shade of a tree (সে গাছের ছায়ায় লুকিয়ে থাকত), if lucky enough to find one (যদি সে খুঁজে পেত ভাগ্যক্রমে)।
At night (রাতে), he walked slowly (সে ধীরে ধীরে হাঁটত) to a slum (একটি বস্তিতে), by the rail tracks (রেল লাইনের পাশে)—a place where the city dumps its forgotten souls (যেখানে শহর তার ভুলে যাওয়া আত্মাদের ফেলে দেয়)।
His "home" was a room smaller than a bathroom (তার "ঘর" ছিল একটি বাথরুমের চেয়েও ছোট), with tin walls that leaked during rain (যার টিনের দেয়াল বৃষ্টির সময় পানি চুইয়ে দিত), and no electricity (এবং সেখানে কোন বিদ্যুৎ ছিল না)।
Darkness was his ceiling lamp (অন্ধকার ছিল তার ছাদের বাতি), and silence, his radio (আর নিস্তব্ধতা ছিল তার রেডিও)।
Still, he smiled (তবুও, সে হাসত)।
Not because life was good (না কারণ জীবন ভালো ছিল), but because he hadn't forgotten how to be human (বরং কারণ সে ভুলে যায়নি মানুষ কিভাবে হতে হয়)।
He would share his stale bread with a stray cat (সে তার বাসি রুটি ছিন্নমূল একটা বিড়ালের সঙ্গে ভাগ করত), give his last coin to a coughing child (তার শেষ কয়েনটি কাশি দেওয়া শিশুকে দিত), and bless every soul who acknowledged him (এবং প্রতিটি মানুষকে আশীর্বাদ করত যারা তাকে স্বীকৃতি দিত)।
People passed him every day (মানুষ প্রতিদিন তাকে পাশ কাটিয়ে যেত)—young, rich, fast-paced people (তরুণ, ধনী, ব্যস্ত মানুষ) with headphones in their ears (যাদের কানে হেডফোন থাকত)।
They never knew (তারা কখনও জানত না) that beneath the dirt and wrinkles (যে ময়লা আর ভাঁজের নিচে) lived a heart that still remembered love (একটি হৃদয় বাস করত যা এখনো ভালোবাসা মনে রাখে), and eyes that once dreamed of something better (এবং এমন চোখ যা একসময় আরও ভালো কিছুর স্বপ্ন দেখত)।
And every night (এবং প্রতি রাতে), lying on the cold floor (ঠান্ডা মেঝেতে শুয়ে), staring at the tin roof above (উপরে টিনের ছাদে তাকিয়ে), Sabur whispered one wish (সবুর একটি প্রার্থনা করত)—not for riches or revenge (না ধন-সম্পদের জন্য, না প্রতিশোধের জন্য)—but simply for peace (শুধু শান্তির জন্য).
