A 22-year-old student in Narayanganj’s Araihazar was allegedly abducted and beaten by Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal activists after sharing a Facebook post about load-shedding, according to his family.

The family alleged that Arafat Hossain was taken to a nearby club, where he was accused of supporting the Bangladesh Chhatra League and forced to record a video. They also claimed Tk20,000 was paid in two instalments through bKash for his release.

Arafat was released later that afternoon and received treatment at Araihazar Upazila Health Complex. Police said they found evidence that he had allegedly been held and assaulted but said the ransom claim had not yet been confirmed.

Indie Reels, the production company behind Coke Studio Bangla’s “Patar Bashori”, has denied allegations that filming damaged the historic Bara Sardar Bari at Sonargaon Museum.

The company said cracks and deterioration visible in recently circulated images existed before the shoot and claimed it has photographs and footage documenting the site’s condition before and after filming.

Indie Reels also said authorities inspected the site during production and later issued clearance confirming that the shoot caused no damage to the heritage structure. The company urged media outlets to verify the claims with Sonargaon Museum authorities before reporting on the controversy.

Somoy TV has apologised to the public for its role in spreading misinformation and biased coverage during the Awami League’s 17-year rule.

Somoy TV CEO Jobair Babu said the channel had disseminated information without basis and acknowledged that it had labelled July protesters as “terrorists”. He said the media must learn from its past and create an environment to start anew.

Somoy TV later confirmed Babu’s remarks on its verified page, sharing a video of his apology.

Seventeen-year-old A-level student Shahed Sharif Ahmed from Mymensingh, Bangladesh, has launched ‘Ghush.Site’, a platform where people can report alleged bribery in government services.

Shahed said the idea came from his family’s experience after his mother’s death, when they allegedly faced repeated demands for money while trying to access her benefits.

Since its launch on August 21, the website has received 9,665 complaints, with alleged bribe demands totalling more than Tk 300 crore. Shahed says his goal is to promote transparency and help reduce bribery in public services.

Architects and artists from Bangladesh, Greece, Italy and Switzerland have come together to build Jonaki Ghor, a fire-resilient community space above a wastewater treatment plant in Dhaka’s densely populated Korail.

Built by the Adda Collective over two years of workshops with local children, the elevated space provides room for children and women to learn, play and gather without taking up the settlement’s scarce land.

Designed with steel and translucent jute-resin panels, Jonaki Ghor is intended to serve as a learning centre, playground and community hub, offering a rare “breathing space” in one of Dhaka’s most crowded and fire-prone neighbourhoods.

Bangladeshi social entrepreneur Runa Khan has received the 2026 Ramon Magsaysay Award for her decades-long work supporting communities in remote, river-eroded and climate-vulnerable parts of Bangladesh.

Khan, founder and executive director of Friendship, launched the organisation in 2002 with a hospital ship serving people living on chars along the Jamuna River. Its programmes have since expanded into healthcare, education, disaster response, climate resilience and economic development.

Friendship now reaches around 7.5 million people annually through initiatives focused on healthcare, climate action, sustainable livelihoods, inclusion, rights and cultural preservation.

Runa Khan shares this year’s honour with Singaporean diplomat Tommy Koh and Myanmar’s Bo Chì. The awards will be presented in Manila on November 15.

A man in Patuakhali allegedly sold his 18-month-old son for Tk1 lakh to buy a new iPhone, according to the child’s family.

Md Maruf reportedly took his son Musa from their home in Dashmina on Saturday morning, telling his mother he was taking the child to the market.

After the pair failed to return, relatives searched for them. The family later alleged that Maruf admitted to handing Musa over to Imran Hossain for Tk1 lakh.

The child has since been rescued, while police are investigating the incident and pursuing legal action against those allegedly involved. Imran claimed he took Musa through a written agreement before handing him to his father-in-law’s family.

Tyger Media has announced the strategic acquisition of Dhaka-based AI tutoring startup Borno AI, expanding its operations into AI-powered education.

Borno AI developed an AI-powered tutoring platform for K–12 students, offering personalized learning experiences aligned with Bangladesh’s NCTB curriculum. Following the acquisition, Borno AI will operate under the sole management of Tyger Media, which plans to use its media distribution, technology and content capabilities to expand the platform’s reach among students.

Borno AI founder Tamzid Rahman will move on to pursue his own projects, while Tyger Media assumes full management and operational responsibility for the platform.

Financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed.
