At least 12 people were killed as a group of "more than 10" suspects opened fire in an informal settlement in South Africa on Tuesday evening, police said.

The suspects "moved through the area, opening fire on residents" at multiple locations before fleeing the scene, police said.

A former imam in east London has been sentenced to life in prison for sexually abusing women and girls, including victims as young as 12 years old.

Abdul Halim Khan was found guilty of 21 offences, including r**e, sexual assault, and child sexual abuse committed between 2005 and 2014.

The court heard that Khan used his position as a religious leader to gain the trust of victims from the local Bangladeshi Muslim community. He falsely claimed to have supernatural powers and used fear, threats, and religious manipulation to silence victims.

Judge Leslie Cuthbert told the court that Khan had “systematically abused” his position of power for sexual gratification. He was sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court and must serve at least 20 years before being eligible for parole.

Prosecutors said Khan convinced some victims that they were possessed by evil spirits and claimed only he could “cleanse” them. In one case, he falsely told a young girl she had ovarian cancer before taking her to an isolated location and ra**ng her.

Police said the case came to light after one of the youngest victims reported the abuse. |
