A Black Night for the family of a Patriot trade Union Leader
I am Khandakar Imran Azam. My Father is K M Azam, General Secretary of Jatio Sramik League (JSL). JSL is one of the labor federations of ITUC-BC. We are affiliated to ITUC, ITUC-AP and SARTUC. K M Azam is not a name only, he is the brand of all labor folk of Bangladesh irrespective of any party. He is the RT member of JILAF, ITUC and ITUC-AP. He was the Titular member of ITUC and ITUC-AP just a couple of years ago.
With deep concern and disheartened heart, I would like to convey my salaam to all my comrades. Following the protest and new independence of Bangladeshi people, a very tragic thing happened to my father. Just after the day Our X Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned her post, a chaotic and dangerous situation has arrived in Bangladesh. No polices are there and no law enforcement is there. Only army is there but no shooting order. Many Miscreants of Jamaat, BNP and Some unknown terrorists started to make demands for extortion money giving threat, kidnapping and vandalization along with some establishment possession. These are very unfortunate situations.
Following the events, one day in the noon just after the day the Government falls, a group of terrorists from BNP, as per their own declaration to my father, tried to attack our house and tried to find my father and me for extortion money demand. But for that time, we spared and they flew away as it was a public day light time. But, in the evening, when my father went to visit his one supporter home for some discussion purpose, they followed him and forcefully entered into the house of my father’s supporter Mehedi Babu. After that, they kidnapped my father K M Azam and brought him to a under construction building and demanded 5 crore taka and tortured him in a very dangerous manner with S S Rod beating him indefinitely. He became very sick and needed to be hospitalized. They asked him for the money otherwise, they threatened to give fire to our house and also threatened to kill me (Khandakar Imran Azam) and my 2 children. My father told them, you are in wrong that I can give you this amount. He also told them, as a politician you can kill me but as a trade unionist, I have some identity and I have my comrades all over the over the world. They will not spare you. UN will not Spare you. ITUC, ITUC-AP will not spare you. After that, they left him alone in a place and called us to take him. He rescued him in a bad manner and he is alright and alive now. So my question is that as a Awami League leader, do my family has no right to live as we are from Awami League? My leaders may have done some mistakes. Court is there, law enforcement is there. Is it the name of our democracy and new independence that a trade union leader is tortured to this extent? The question is to the conscience of all the nation. We want Justice and We want security. We are still running from our home from one place to another. Why only with us? We have not done any harm to anyone never ever. Please save our family.
