Plastic waste reaches the ocean mainly when litter is carried by wind and rain into drains, rivers, and waterways, turning them into “plastic superhighways.” Discarded fishing nets and other marine waste add to the problem.

The countries contributing the most ocean plastic are not always the biggest plastic producers. Instead, pollution is often driven by long coastlines, heavy rainfall, dense river systems, and weak waste management. The Philippines is estimated to account for about 35% of ocean plastic leakage, followed by several Asian countries including India, Malaysia, China, Indonesia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Thailand. Brazil is the only non-Asian country in the top 10.

Cutting plastic production, improving waste collection, and preventing trash from reaching rivers remain key steps in reducing ocean plastic pollution.

Female Labor Force Participation Rate (LFPR)

Ranked from highest percentage of working-age women in the labor market to lowest.

Bangladesh (~38.6%) — Leads the major South Asian economies, driven heavily by the ready-made garment (RMG) industry and microfinance initiatives.

India (~32.4%) — Seeing notable upward growth due to rising female employment in rural development schemes and the technology sector.

Sri Lanka (~31.0%) — Maintained by women's steady employment in tea estates, apparel factories, and the education sector.

Nepal (~27.5%) — Primarily driven by high female engagement in agriculture and small-scale local entrepreneurship.

Pakistan (~24.0%) — Increasing gradually due to formal medical professions and digital freelancing, though still facing cultural limitations.

Afghanistan (< 5.0%) — The lowest in the region following strict legal restrictions on female education and formal employment.

(Note: Data for smaller nations like Bhutan and Maldives generally hovers dynamically between 30% and 40%).
