Bangladeshi journalists form silent human chain to protest killings of journalists in Gaza
Dhaka, August 29, 2025 — Journalists across Bangladesh today staged a nationwide “Silent Human Chain” to protest the repeated killings of journalists in Gaza and to express solidarity with their colleagues working under fire in the war-torn territory.
From 4:00 pm, journalists in Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna, Rajshahi, and Barishal stood shoulder-to-shoulder for half an hour, holding placards with messages including “Journalism is not a crime,” “Journalists are not targets,” “Stop killing journalists,” “Journalism matters,” and “In solidarity with journalists in Gaza.”
The silent protest comes as the death toll of journalists in Gaza has almost crossed 200 in the past two years, with reporters and media workers repeatedly being targeted during military operations.
In Dhaka, the gathering took place near the Central Shaheed Minar, a national monument commemorating language martyrs. The human chain concluded with journalists lighting candles in memory of their slain colleagues. Parallel demonstrations were held simultaneously in the other major cities, creating a powerful nationwide act of solidarity.
The collective statement from Bangladeshi journalists carried a clear demand:
“The Israeli armed forces must stop targeting journalists in Gaza. Journalists are civilians fulfilling their professional duty of reporting from conflict zones. They must not be turned into victims.”
The protest also mourned the deaths of at least five journalists killed during an Israeli strike on August 25 at a hospital in Khan Yunis, Gaza. Participants observed silence and paid tribute to their departed colleagues.
The journalist community in Bangladesh reaffirmed their commitment to defending press freedom and called on the international community to act urgently to protect journalists working in conflict areas.

গাজায় সাংবাদিক হত্যার প্রতিবাদে নীরব মানববন্ধন গড়লেন বাংলাদেশের সাংবাদিকরা
ঢাকা, ২৯ আগস্ট ২০২৫ — গাজায় সাংবাদিকদের ওপর ধারাবাহিক হত্যাযজ্ঞের প্রতিবাদে এবং আগুনের ভেতর থেকেও দায়িত্বপালনরত সহকর্মীদের সঙ্গে সংহতি প্রকাশে আজ সারা বাংলাদেশে সাংবাদিকরা একযোগে “নীরব মানববন্ধন” কর্মসূচি পালন করেছেন।
বিকেল ৪টা থেকে ঢাকাসহ চট্টগ্রাম, খুলনা, রাজশাহী ও বরিশালে সাংবাদিকরা অর্ধঘণ্টা ধরে কাঁধে কাঁধ মিলিয়ে দাঁড়ান। তাঁদের হাতে ছিল প্ল্যাকার্ড, যাতে লেখা ছিল: “সাংবাদিকতা অপরাধ নয়,” “সাংবাদিকরা লক্ষ্যবস্তু নন,” “সাংবাদিক হত্যা বন্ধ করো,” “সাংবাদিকতা জরুরি,” এবং “গাজার সাংবাদিকদের সঙ্গে সংহতি।”
গত দুই বছরে গাজায় সাংবাদিক নিহতের সংখ্যা প্রায় ২০০ ছাড়িয়েছে। সামরিক অভিযানের সময় বারবার সাংবাদিক ও গণমাধ্যমকর্মীরা লক্ষ্যবস্তুতে পরিণত হয়েছেন – এমন প্রেক্ষাপটে এই নীরব প্রতিবাদ অনুষ্ঠিত হলো।
ঢাকায় মানববন্ধন অনুষ্ঠিত হয় কেন্দ্রীয় শহীদ মিনারের সামনে, যা ভাষা শহীদদের স্মৃতিবিজড়িত। মানববন্ধনের সমাপ্তি ঘটে নিহত সহকর্মীদের স্মরণে মোমবাতি প্রজ্জ্বলনের মাধ্যমে। একইসঙ্গে দেশের অন্য প্রধান শহরগুলোতেও সমাবেশ অনুষ্ঠিত হয়, যা তৈরি করেছে এক শক্তিশালী জাতীয় সংহতির চিত্র।
বাংলাদেশি সাংবাদিকদের পক্ষ থেকে যৌথ বিবৃতিতে বলা হয়:
“গাজায় সাংবাদিকদের লক্ষ্যবস্তু করা বন্ধ করতে হবে। সাংবাদিকরা সাধারণ নাগরিক, যারা সংঘাতপূর্ণ এলাকা থেকে তথ্য জানানোর পেশাগত দায়িত্ব পালন করেন। তাঁদেরকে কোনোভাবেই ঘটনার শিকারে পরিণত করা যাবে না।”
প্রতিবাদ কর্মসূচিতে সাম্প্রতিক ২৫ আগস্ট গাজার খান ইউনিসে এক হাসপাতালে ইসরায়েলি হামলায় নিহত অন্তত পাঁচ সাংবাদিকের জন্য শোক প্রকাশ করা হয়। অংশগ্রহণকারীরা নীরবতা পালন করেন এবং নিহত সহকর্মীদের প্রতি শ্রদ্ধা নিবেদন করেন।
বাংলাদেশের সাংবাদিক সমাজ আবারও সাংবাদিকতার স্বাধীনতা রক্ষায় তাঁদের অঙ্গীকার ব্যক্ত করে এবং সংঘাতপূর্ণ এলাকায় কর্মরত সাংবাদিকদের সুরক্ষায় জরুরি উদ্যোগ নেবার জন্য আন্তর্জাতিক সম্প্রদায়ের প্রতি আহ্বান জানায়।
