Happy Mother's Day 2026
The Origin of Mother’s Day
The modern celebration of Mother’s Day originated in the United States, where it is observed on the second Sunday of May each year. The idea was first introduced by Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia. On May 12, 1907, she organized a small memorial gathering in honor of her mother.
Anna Jarvis’s mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, worked to bring women together to promote friendship, healthcare, and social welfare. She wanted society to recognize the immense dedication and hard work involved in raising children.
In Grafton, West Virginia, Ann Reeves Jarvis established a “Mothers’ Day Work Club” aimed at reducing child mortality rates. Tragically, she herself had lost nine of her children. She passed away on May 9, 1905.
To honor her mother’s memory, Anna Jarvis chose May 12 for the memorial event, as it was the Sunday closest to the anniversary of her mother’s death. The ceremony was held at the church her mother regularly attended.
Within the next five years, Mother’s Day began to be celebrated in nearly every state across the United States. In 1914, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson officially declared Mother’s Day a national holiday.
Since then, Mother’s Day has been celebrated in many parts of the world on the second Sunday of May each year.
Mother’s Day Around the World
Mother’s Day is celebrated in different ways and on different dates across the globe.
In Japan, the day is marked by expressions of love and gratitude. Children often present gifts to their mothers, and many families celebrate with special traditions and gatherings.
In Nepal, Mother’s Day is observed through a special festival called “Mata Tirtha Aunsi.” On this day, children spend quality time with their mothers and honor them with love and respect.
In Ethiopia, Mother’s Day is connected to a three-day festival called “Antrosht,” celebrated after the rainy season and at the beginning of autumn. Families gather together to prepare traditional meals made with vegetables, cheese, and meat, followed by singing and dancing.
A Timeless Appreciation
Although Mother’s Day is celebrated worldwide, mothers deserve love and appreciation every single day. Every child should cherish and care for their mother throughout life.
You can make your mother happy in simple yet meaningful ways — spend time with her, take her out somewhere special, or even cook a meal for her with your own hands. Small gestures of love can mean the world to a mother.
