The Early Spring: Overall Thoughts about Luan Nian (Luke)
Lukeās character is much more complicated than the typical cold, successful male lead who falls in love and suddenly becomes soft. I read somewhere that Luke can be described as an āsafery boxā with a soft heart, and I think that metaphor fits him so well. He is basically a man who has locked everything inside himself. You can try to guess the password once, twice, three times but if you keep getting it wrong, the box simply locks itself completely and I think that is Lukeās biggest problem. He built his entire identity around being competent, independent and in control. He is brilliant at his work, decisive, demanding, and very used to being the person who has the answers. But emotionally, this man is seriously underdeveloped. He knows how to solve a business problem. He just doesnāt know what to do when the problem is his own feelings and Flora completely throws his system out of balance.
THE ARMOR DIDNāT COME FROM NOWHERE
The drama gives us a pretty clear explanation for why Luke became this way. His father was constantly critical of him, putting him down and making him feel like whatever he did was never good enough. When Luke eventually experienced a setback at the company and came home needing support, his father didnāt comfort him. He mocked him for being weak. That kind of upbringing teaches a very damaging lesson: If I show that I need someone, I am giving them the power to hurt me. So Luke learned to do the opposite. Donāt ask, complain or show weakness and donāt say you need someone. Most importantly, donāt let anyone know how much they matter to you.
The sad irony is that he eventually became almost exactly the kind of person his father was. The poisonous tongue. The constant criticism. The instinct to push people away before they can hurt him. Luke knows this about himself. He is fully aware that he is becoming like his dad which also frustrates him.
HE CARES. HE JUST DOESNāT KNOW HOW TO SAY IT.
Lukeās way of loving is mostly through actions. He notices Flora being cold so he lends her his jacket, he sends drunk Flora home, makes her his special osmanthus milk. He takes care of her dog even though he claims he doesnāt like him. š He quietly protects her from people who are taking advantage of her. He notices things about her that she doesnāt even realize heās paying attention to. Luke assumes that if he cares about someone, they should be able to see it through his actions but Flora doesnāt work that way.
AND YES, LUKE IS STILL A RED FLAG FOR ME
Understanding where his behavior comes from doesnāt automatically make the behavior okay. Luke IS controlling. He IS possessive. He IS unnecessarily cruel with his words and some of the things he says to Flora are genuinely hurtful throughout their 6 years of relationship.
That line about their six years together being replaceable? Yeah⦠no. š You can understand that he was angry, hurt and trying to protect himself, but that doesnāt make it less cruel. I know that theyāre just throwing insults at each other though, just trying to hurt each other but still , these words are just nasty to be coming out from a man who loves Flora- but Flora is not any better- for me sheās actually more brutal here)
I think that when talking about Luke, we need to also understand that his trauma explains his behavior. It doesnāt excuse it because if the story were simply saying, āHe had a difficult childhood, therefore everything he does is okay,ā then Lukeās character development wouldnāt mean much. The whole point is that he eventually has to recognize that his coping mechanisms are hurting the person he loves.
LUKEāS REAL CHARACTER ARC IS LEARNING TO SPEAK HONESTLY
For me, Lukeās growth isnāt really about becoming āsofter.ā Itās about becoming more emotionally honest. He has to stop hiding behind competence, sarcasm, silence and control. He has to learn to say Iām sorry, I miss you, I love you. Which he eventually does.
Remember when they went to Tibet? We saw that he had remembered their first meeting all along. For six years, he let Flora believe he didnāt remember. That little detail says so much about him because of course he remembered. This is Luke weāre talking about. He remembers EVERYTHING. He takes notes on Floraās wishes. He just doesnāt explicitly say them. Admitting all of these felt like more than a romantic reveal. It was Luke finally letting Flora see inside the safety box.
When we saw him chase Flora and become her cook, assistant , driver and all. Whenever sheās at Floraās home, you could see him take off his suit jacket and putting on that simple apron. Heās allowing himself to simply be a person, a partner, someone who can be vulnerable and ordinary with the woman he loves. Even the proposal reflects that growth. He isnāt just asking Flora to marry him. Heās acknowledging her entire life, including the people and experiences that existed before him. Even Sun Yuanzhu. I thought that was particularly meaningful because Luke had once been jealous of the parts of Floraās life that didnāt include him. By the end, he understands that loving Flora means accepting all of Flora, not just the version of her that belongs to him.
Heās not a perfect male lead who just needed the right woman to āfixā him and heās not simply a toxic man who magically becomes good because he fell in love. Heās a deeply flawed man who has to confront the fact that the emotional armor that once protected him is now hurting the person he loves. Lukeās journey is really about unlearning. Unlearning the belief that vulnerability is weakness and that silence is protection. Unlearning that control is the same thing as security and the idea that people should simply understand his feelings without him having to say them. And most importantly, learning that loving someone isnāt just about protecting them. Sometimes you have to let them see you, too.
He started the story knowing exactly how to control everything around him. He ended it finally learning how to let someone into the one place he had kept locked for years. His heart. ā¤ļø
