Bangladesh’s Runa Khan, founder and executive director of Friendship, has been named a recipient of the 2026 Ramon Magsaysay Award, often referred to as Asia’s Nobel Prize. She was recognized for her long-standing commitment to serving remote and underserved communities through Friendship, a social-purpose organization she founded in 2002. The organization works on healthcare, education, community development, and social inclusion. Singaporean diplomat Tommy Koh and Myanmar human rights activist Bo Kyi also received the award this year. The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation said the winners were selected for their dedication to public service, community empowerment, and creating opportunities for others.

Two students from Dhaka Residential Model College—Md Shafiul Alam Siddiqee Shrestha and Aranya Abeer Khan Prapya—have clinched first place at the 16th e-ICON World Contest 2026 in Seoul. Competing against 252 teams from 16 countries, their multinational team, Arup-Bit, earned the prestigious Minister of Education of the Republic of Korea Award on August 7 at the Stanford Hotel Seoul.

Teaming up with Seongjae Middle School students Yoonkyu Lee and Junmo Kim, and supervised by DRMC teacher Sayed Mahbub Hasan Amiri alongside Korean teacher Sunyoung Yoon, the team developed "Lighthouse." Two brothers from Philadelphia with Irish roots have become unlikely heroes of Bangladesh football after helping the country win the SAFF U-20 title in Malé, Maldives, in April.
Ronan and Declan Sullivan, who had never visited Bangladesh before their trial, became eligible through their Bangladeshi maternal ancestry. Their journey began with an unexpected Instagram message from the “Save Bangladesh Football” fan page, eventually leading them to a national-team camp just months later.
Getting there was far from simple. The twins had to navigate the complicated process of obtaining Bangladeshi passports before travelling from New York to Delhi and then Dhaka. At the camp, they competed against more than 30 players for places in the squad while also adapting to a language barrier and unfamiliar football environment.
Their breakthrough came in Malé, where the brothers helped Bangladesh claim the U-20 title, turning an unusual family connection into a memorable footballing achievement.
Their success has also highlighted a larger opportunity. With Bangladesh ranked 181st in the FIFA rankings, Declan believes talented players of Bangladeshi origin around the world could strengthen the national team.
The Sullivans’ story is now part of a broader push to transform Bangladesh from a nation of football fans into one that develops and competes with more players on the field.

Bangladeshi entrepreneur K M Ridwanul Bari Zion turned a delivery problem into the fastest courier service in Bangladesh, building Steadfast Courier from just five riders operating out of a single room in his home.
The company officially began its journey on September 1, 2016, but the idea emerged years earlier. Although he studied Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Zion started working as a freelancer in 2012 before launching an e-commerce business in January 2014. Running the online business exposed him to a major challenge faced by many entrepreneurs at the time: the lack of reliable courier services tailored to the needs of e-commerce.
Rather than waiting for the problem to be solved, he decided to build the solution himself. Starting with limited resources and a small team, Zion gradually expanded the company while focusing on the growing needs of online businesses across Bangladesh.
The company’s people-first approach became especially visible during the Covid-19 pandemic, when it reportedly hired individuals who had lost their jobs and provided accommodation, food and medical support for affected employees.
Zion credits his wife, Zowairia Mostary, who later became the company’s chairperson, as a key source of inspiration. His journey highlights how identifying a problem, taking calculated risks and staying persistent can transform a small startup into a business with national ambitions.
