"The Turin Horse" is an incredible cinematic experience that immerses viewers into a bleak and austere world. The film follows the lives of a father and a daughter living in a desolate farmstead, their routine disrupted by the gradual decline of their horse.
Since the first frame, Tarr's signature long takes and stunning black-and-white cinematography create a haunting atmosphere, capturing the monotony and harshness of their existence. The fact there is minimal dialogue creates an even deeper sense of isolation. The movie focuses on powerful visuals and sound design to convey emotions and the weight of the family struggles.
The film's slow pacing is clearly a challenge and will not please everyone, but it serves a purpose: plunging the audience in the characters' desolation and existential crisis. This is more than a film. It's a philosophical meditation on the human condition, exploring themes of suffering, resilience, and the relentless march of time.
While not a film for everyone due to its deliberate pace and somber tone, "The Turin Horse" is an artful and evocative piece that lingers in the mind, long after watching it.
