The legendary Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 continues to draw crowds across the United States as the world’s only operational “Big Boy” steam locomotive rolls through California during its 2026 tour. Originally built in 1941, the massive locomotive was designed to haul extremely heavy freight trains over steep mountain routes, becoming one of the most powerful steam engines ever constructed.
Featuring a unique 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement, the locomotive uses two sets of driving wheels beneath a single boiler to generate enormous traction and pulling power. Weighing more than 1.2 million pounds and measuring around 132 feet long, the machine was engineered for strength, endurance, and long-distance freight service.
After being retired in 1961, Big Boy No. 4014 spent decades on static display before Union Pacific Railroad completed a full restoration in 2019, returning the historic locomotive to operating condition. More than 80 years after it was first built, the engine still runs under its own power, offering railfans and engineering enthusiasts a rare glimpse into the golden age of steam railroading.
Footage from the 2026 tour showcases the locomotive’s massive driving wheels, synchronized connecting rods, and powerful steam exhaust — a moving piece of living railroad history that continues to captivate audiences nationwide.
